The Glenlivet 12 Year Whisky has a history that dates back to the early 19th century. In 1822, George Smith began distilling whisky illegally in the Livet valley. Two years later, when the law changed, Smith was first in line for a license and Glenlivet became the first legal whisky distillery in the parish.
The Glenlivet is made in the Scottish Highlands using malt from Speyside and mineral water from Cairngorms National Park. The whisky is distilled in traditional lantern-shaped stills and then matured in oak casks.
The Glenlivet was always available as single malt, but it wasn't until after the Second World War that it began its rise. By then the firm was being run by Bill Smith Grant who saw the American market as offering new opportunities for the whisky.
The Glenlivet translates from Gaelic to mean “valley of the smooth flowing one” and is most likely referencing the nearby River Livet.
