As an American who served briefly... I have to say, this Soldier is one of the finest human beings to have lived. He fulfilled his oath to his country, never compromised his integrity - thus maintaining his honor & loyalty. This is incredibly admirable. Japan should be proud of this man. Remember him. I remember learning about him in class as a real-life example of not only what propaganda can do to a person, but also the grit and tenacity that could result. He was a man who truly loved his country and believed in its mission. The fact that he was able to accept the war had ended at all is telling in how much of his mental faculties he retained during those decades of living in the jungle. Did he have moments of madness? Of course. Was he a mad man? No. Thank you for being so respectful in your telling of his story.
