Throwing Tiny Porcelain Vases - Matt Horne Pottery

For a bit of fun, I had a go at throwing some really tiny miniatures in porcelain on the wheel. Throwing small can also help with improving your technique, as the precision is a great exercise for practising your throwing skills.

I’m taking a ceramics course in college and I am taking another course next quarter for wheel throwing and I want to make tiny vases. Hopefully I have the skill to wheel throw. I have such a love for ceramics even if I suck at it.

Hi I’m thinking of starting to make miniatures pots just asking what clay you use plus how do you fire them and what glaze do you use thank you for taking your time 👍🏻

Ahh. here is where I've sort of ended up with my throwing - lots of small bottles and such. Happy accidents really, having to trim off tops more and more, then trying to rescue something. It's fun. Now when I intend to make one, it goes horribly. haha! But I love practicing!

If you throw minis again, try using sculptural tools for ribs instead of the credit card. Over the years I have carved particular shapes for bowls, etc. You can also trim the credit card to make it smaller and than shape it as you wish. I know the minis are not your thing, but you obviously have a flair for them. Purchase a cheap THIN cut off tool (most of them are pretty big for fine work) and use that for cut off of rim. Or use a long sewing needle attached to a pencil sized dowel with epoxy putty. A great cut off tool for big and small pots. Lovely form on your pots of all sizes.
Cheers.

Would you turn the bottoms before firing? I've never managed to turn my miniature vases/bottles without messing them up.

Hi! does anyone have any advice as to how to get a tall even neck on regular sized vases? When I try it always collapses. Is my clay too stiff or soft for a vase, or is it a technique thing?
