Exploring the possibility of living in Italy or embracing expat life in Italy brings with it the necessity to navigate the complexities of the Italian tax system, particularly for those moving to Italy or considering dual citizenship. Italy's tax framework, focusing on residency over citizenship, delineates clear guidelines for individuals on their fiscal responsibilities, ensuring a smoother transition into life in Italy. Whether you're pondering a move, already enjoying life as an expat, or stepping into the vibrant life Italy offers, understanding your tax obligations is crucial. Engaging with Italy's Agenzia delle Entrate, leveraging professional advice, and familiarizing yourself with Italy's tax treaties, especially if you're from the U.S., are essential steps to ensure compliance and enjoy the rich, fulfilling experience of living in Italy without the worry of fiscal missteps. In this episode of the Italian Citizenship Podcast hosted by Italian attorney Marco Permuniand and dual citizen expat podcaster Rafael Di Furia, we'll learn more about the essential aspects of Italy's tax system, residency requirements, and strategies to avoid double taxation, providing clarity and peace of mind for those embarking on their Italian journey.

I am glad you mentioned the CAF because I had always been told by other dual citizens that I had to hire a commercialista but after I got here my Italian friends introduced me to the CAF, thank goodness. I wish someone had mentioned this to me earlier.

Hello Marco and Raffaele, Your video is very helpful.
Could you please clarify when the 183 days residence starts - hopefully it starts the first day that your residency application is filed … is that right? What if you came from a foreign country to apply for Italian citizenship by descent in early April and it takes a long time to find an apartment where the owner permits its usage for applying for residency for Italian citizenship by descent and also for the town clerk to be available to process your residence application? If you apply for residency in July does the 183 days start then? Do you have to be in Italy if the time to process your application is longer than the 183 days and you want to return to your home country to prevent paying more income tax? Thank you so much, Jo-Anne

What. If you arrive in Italy in early April but don’t become a resident until July and your citizenship is still not processed by 183 days. Should one leave Italy before the 183rd day
From the day of arrival in Italy or 183rd day from the time you became a resident. I don’t want to cancel my Italian rental contract if my citizenship is not obtained before the 183rd day of arrival but don’t want to pay double taxes either, . Thanks Jo-Anne

Canada...What about Canadians who want to make their residence Italy instead of Canada. Can Canadians take advantage of the 7% tax rate for passive income? I think I heard there was some sort of problem with Canadians being allowed to do this.
