Waterfall Yukankoski in Karelia / White Bridges
Our photo tour to Karelia to the Yukankoski waterfall. The White Bridges (Yukankoski) waterfall is striking in its scale. Its height ranges from 18 to 19.5 meters, the water descends in raging cascades. It is significantly taller than the more famous Kivach waterfall, a local landmark, which is only 10.7 meters high. Yukankoski is located on the Kulismajoki River in a picturesque place in the middle of a dense forest, where you have to get on difficult roads. The nearest settlements are the village of Leppyasilta, which is 10 km away, as well as the city of Pitkyaranta, located 33 km from the White Bridges waterfall. Despite the beauty of the waterfall itself and the magnificent scenery in general, it is not particularly famous and rarely visited by tourists.
The name of the waterfall comes from a small Finnish settlement, which was once located on the Kulismajoki River. The settlement was called Yukankontu, which in Karelian means "yucca estate", and the name of the waterfall is translated as "yucca threshold".
But in the 70s of the last century, the locals decided to rename Yukankoski. They called it more easily pronounceable - the White Bridges waterfall. This name appeared thanks to the Finns, who built the road, and then the bridges of white stone across the river. One of the bridges passed right in front of the waterfall. Today, only ruins remain of them, which are quite difficult to find among the large number of stones lying around. Sometimes the waterfall is called "White Pillars", but this is an incorrect name.
The White Bridges waterfall changes depending on the season. In spring, the rapid full-flowing course of the river with impurities of peat stains the water yellow. The waterfall furiously brings down massive water streams from its entire height into a foaming cauldron at the foot.
In summer, the amount of water decreases significantly, its color changes from yellow to crystal clear. Now you can distinguish individual trickles of water, which quickly cascade and form a foamy lace at the foot. The water warms up quickly, so in summer there are a lot of people swimming right in the waterfall.
In autumn, the Yukankoski is gaining strength again, the water flows become more powerful, but not the same as in spring and only until the first frosts. With the onset of cold weather, the waterfall is shackled by thin ice, and with the advent of severe frosts, it is covered with ice flows. Despite this, water continues to constantly flow under the ice.
The White Bridges waterfall is surrounded by incredibly beautiful landscapes. The Kulismajoki River runs along ancient moss-covered boulders, and age-old fir trees rise along the left bank. Not far from Yukankoski there is a beautiful clearing where you can set up a camp.
Around the waterfall and in the nearby area of 87.9 hectares, a hydrological nature monument "White Bridges" was created. But tourist trips to this area are not prohibited, subject to the careful attitude of man to nature.
The very presence and influence of man on the Yukankoska neighborhood is minimal. From the Finnish settlement, which gave the name to the waterfall, only ruins remained. Therefore, wild animals in these places are quite at ease. If you are careful and try not to make noise, you can meet a wide variety of representatives of the Karelian fauna.
To get to the waterfall, you need to get to the turn to Lake Ruokojärvi. You can get here from the cities of Sortavalla, Pitkyaranta or Yarn. This turn to the lake is quite noticeable; a site for car repairs has been built at the Sortavala-Petrozavodsk crossroads. The road itself is unpaved and departs to the left side of the highway.
Having made this way to visit the White Bridges waterfall, then you should go straight ahead without turning into forks, some of which are quite wide and can be misleading. If a lake appears on the left side, then the direction is chosen correctly.
After that, the road becomes sandy and starts to go up the mountain, then you should keep to the right until the signs with the words "White Bridges" appear. There are still 2-2.5 kilometers from them to the waterfall itself, you can walk them on foot, admiring the magnificent landscape and nature almost untouched by human hands, or drive by car.
Thanks to modern technology, many of the problems of finding a certain place disappear by themselves. Now it is enough to use a GPS-navigator to visit the White Bridges (waterfall). Coordinates: 61°45'12"N; 31°24'37"E.
The Yukankoski waterfall is unique in its own way, very strong and noisy, and incredibly beautiful at any time of the year. The only thing that makes it difficult to access, and therefore less popular, is the difficult forest roads. But having visited this picturesque place, and seeing the waterfall itself, you can acquire pleasant memories and recharge with positive emotions for a long time.
