It's a great cast but not the best movie by Alfred Hitchcock. Thankfully I noticed a young and very good looking a famous first Hamlet, Sir John Gielgud 😊 and could not resist him and fell in love in him. I always knew that he was one of the greatest theater actors and I always did admire him. ❤

On the one hand, it's a treat to see one of the more obscure Hitchcock films, especially with such clear visuals. On the other hand, it's a shame the captions are so bad. Canuvial? I think the word is connubial. In fact I know it is. One of many.

I played it at 0.75 speed. So much more enjoyable!

Mildly interesting trivia: the old lady Mrs. Claypool (about 37:00) is played by American actress Florence Kahn, wife of caricaturist Max Beerbohm, in her first & only movie appearance.

The ending of this movie was always baffling. Marvin (Young) was pinned by a beam after the wreck but still alive. The General (Lorre) struggled toward him through the wreckage, gun in hand, with the apparent purpose of finishing the enemy spy off. Then he proceeds to sit down next to Marvin's head, put his gun down near Marvin's hand and light up a smoke. Marvin calmly picks up the gun and shoots the General dead, then dies. Was it that the regulators required that Lorre die for killing the wrong man? He could have died in the crash. It certainly wasn't realistic the way they did it.

I would never have believed John Gielgud was such a good-looking man when he was young! He was so entirely unnatractive in his older days. The fate of us all, I guess...

I wonder if old boy ever really capped anyone? I suppose he did.

Oops!! Hitchcock made an error. @21:36 Lorre and other guy walk up behind man at organ. Lorre tries to place his hat on the bench to the left of the man sitting on it, but the hat falls off on the floor. Then both guys realize man is dead. Then they hear someone coming into the church, so they leave the room to the right of the organ. But Lorre DID NOT pick up his hat. He runs thru the door without his hat. But just a moment later the 2 guys appear thru another door into another area of the church, and Lorre has his hat with him. Oops!! Oh I guess they went up stairs to the bell tower.

I just learned that Robert Young had an older brother, by 7 years, named Joseph Young. But I guess there was some sort of a family squabble, so he changed his name to Roger Moore (for acting reasons). But I always thought that there could only be one person with a name in movies/tv. That anyone else using the same name had to alter it in some way, add a middle initial or name, add Jr. etc.. Anyway this Joseph Young/Roger Moore had an acting career from 1924-1953, I think it was. Most all bit parts, uncredited. He was in a "3 Stooges" Short, and a few "Our Gang" shorts, and a lot of other things. Further, Robert Young did NOT have an illustrious movie career. This was probably one of his biggest credited roles. Most were smaller roles. His notoriety came in TV with "Father Knows Best" and "Marcus Welby, M.D.".

I wish I had that Navaja knife that Peter Lorre holds on 21:52 !!! They don't make them like that anymore! Now they make them for tourists only, which means quality is junk..

33:11 - 33:16 Nice single of Madeleine Carrol. She looked ravishing in the white gown with white fur wrap in the taxi with Robert Young and at the casino with Young, John Gielgud and Peter Lorre. Is it any wonder that all three of the men were off-the-charts smitten, totally captivated by her ultra feminine charms and beauty? [If subsequent behavior is a clue, we can imagine her director Alfred Hitchcock was too as he became notorious for having a propensity for being enamored by his ice blonde, leading ladies, e.g., Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Tippi Hedren, Eva Marie Saint. . . . . Madeleine was blessed with such a lovely voice too.

'A shot in the dark' -- Thirty years later I wonder if Robert Young, then star of television's no. 1 Nielsen-rated series, "Marcus Welby, M.D." (for its 2nd of 7 seasons, 1970 - 71, on ABC), ever reached out to Madeleine and asked her to consider accepting a key guest star role. Not that she needed the money, but 'for old time's sake' -- assuming the two had a good working relationship on "Secret Agent."

"Free Film Heritage, " Thanks for posting "Secret Agent" -- a most enjoyable, expertly crafted film by the master, Alfred Hitchcock. I liked it.

Had to dump it. Peter was awful. Hitch should have reigned him in instead of urging him to cut loose.

What War in 1936? Oh? This is suppose to be 1916? Not hardly. Not by dress, demeanor, cars, etc.. Also, when was London or England being bombed, with spotlights shining into the sky, in 1916? Didn't I see that at the beginning of the film?
