Xi Jinping warns Joe Biden against 'playing with fire' over Taiwan | DW News

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden held the fifth phone call of their presidencies on Thursday against the backdrop of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's potentially planning a visit to the self-governed Taiwan, which is claimed by China. The call lasted two hours and 17 minutes, according to the White House.

China has vowed to reunite democratically governed Taiwan with the mainland, even if it means using force. In light of Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine, concerns about China turning that threat into reality are rising.

White House officials said that the call had been planned long in advance and would follow a broad agenda.

So I'm not sure that the President of the US can even tell a member of Congress not to make a trip. He could get military commanders and others to call and dissuade, try to get her flight grounded, or try other under-the-table tactics, but the legislature is separate from the executive branch and has its own power.

I think the main mistake the west (US, EU, etc) are making is to classify China as a "foreign system". It is viewed as exotic and threatening, and much less with respect and compassion. I think this is a terrible tradition we need to overcome. We do the same with Russia and I think it is part of the reason why anti-western leaders can come to power. People there also start to view the west as threatening and exotic. We need to stay open minded and intensify cross cultural communications, even though the languages are different. People need to understand each others views, motivations and problems to feel a human connection. We should learn from each other instead of trying to overrule each other.
