Who Will Build The Roads?

In this video, I discuss how free markets do a much better job of providing goods and services to people than do centrally-planned economies.

It's a common mistake today to think that "really important things" (like education, healthcare, defense, food production, etc) should be delegated to the government.

If something is really important, then it is too important to be left to the government-- and should be handled by the free market instead.

So who will build the roads? That's like asking who will make the pencils, or run the grocery stores, or build the rockets, if the government doesn't do it. The answer is: anyone who wants to, or thinks that they can make a profit by doing so.

In the first few decades of the US, most roads were privately financed and constructed. And are modern government roads really that great after all?

Take healthcare out of the hands of the government. Take education out of the hands of the government. And most importantly: take money creation out of the hands of government.

Stop brainwashing people in school that money is another one of those essential government services (chartalism), or that money needs any sort of government blessing in order to function effectively.

It doesn't. Gold and silver emerged as money spontaneously over thousands of years. Gold and silver did not become money because governments blessed them. It's actually the opposite: governments began to issue coins made out of silver and gold, because the free market had already converged on those precious metals.

Government schools are responsible for teaching the big lie of chartalism, that money can only come from the government. But don't be surprised when a government warns you how essential its services are. What else would you expect to hear from a self-interested monopoly?

NYC had a perfectly run train system in the early 1900s. Privately owned, quiet trains, profitable to my knowledge. City took it over. The rest is history.

"You don't need central planners to accomplish great things". And what you don't need is toxic by definition; it eventually causes immense harm. I can attest, having lived in Cuba for 37 years, a beautiful -my- country with the worst centralized system. Thank you so much, Matt; amazing video, as always! HODL ✊

One obvious disaster of government intervention is TSA at airports. They are not improving safety at all, and are simply forcing everyone to waste an extra 1-2hr per flight while TSA violates every passenger's 4th- amendment rights.

I think your point of view is a very good starting point.
Manipulating the money supply and interest rates create a lot of speculation and inefficiency.
The stock market does not produce any service and is currently twice the GDP.
Bitcoin is the exit strategy because we see more value in a software that does not produce anything and will likely force government to proper fiscal discipline.

Good day and thank you MK. My view is that sociopaths, banksters, and governments will always be here. Bitcoin gives us an a real way to vote with our money. Bitcoin continues to rise above the debauchery of the world.

If the government would get out of the way, we'd probably have flying cars by now and not need roads!

Without fiat currency, how can we possibly fund both sides of wars and make our contributors rich? (said every politician, ever)

US public infrastructure is widely known to be in total disrepair and hanging on by a thread. Take one toll road or private turnpike and people will quickly realize who should be building the roads.

What an amazing video Matt! This channel and learning about Bitcoin has taught me that we are indeed not free at all, we were at the mercy of government sociopaths but now there is a chance with Bitcoin!

California expenses billions to fight homeless, but in reality is the company who received the money, not the homeless. Like you said we need better people that is not easy to manipulate by the greedy politicians.

Everyone needs to read Saifedean Ammous's book, "The Fiat Standard, " to have a better understanding of the ills of government intervention using fiat money. The gaslighting from government officials right now is on another level. But as we all know, when the lies stack up on top of each other for so long, it all comes crumbling down.

"For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops."
Luke 12: 2-3

The government seems to me like the collective manifestation of what we would call the ego. The mystics dont cast off the ego entirely, they just relegate it, to its proper position.

Great stuff. Many thanks Matthew. A suggestion for a video, if I may: what effects would Universal Basic Income likely have on free market economies and the prices of goods and services, and how might a Bitcoin standard impact, or be impacted by, UBI if UBI were to be paid out in satoshis? Thanks again.

Love your views. Too many people are not aware of the free market force and they give into 'the state should do this, the state should do that' spiral.

The truth be told, whatever the state get their hands to, either will be done way too expensive or will not be done at all, with the money g.o.n.e.

Whilst I generally agree, I have witnessed both the US healthcare system and the socialised systems in Europe, and additionally the NHS in the U.K.

I would say the best experiences have been in Europe by far, and no one goes bankrupt for unpaid medical bills either.

I know most people in the US don’t either, but I have had Americans tell me they won’t take an ambulance as it’s too expensive . That is a messed up situation, and is supposed to be the free market solution Vs the evil euro communism. Not great.

Here is another good example for comparison: Austria vs. Czechoslovakia - the similar standard of living even after WWII, but huge difference after Velvet Revolution in 1989. Recently I've heard they were asking people in Czechoslovakia around 1990 which industry are they the most concerned about after the transformation towards capitalism (or so called capitalism)... and you wouldn't guess what was the most common answer: they were most concerned about gastronomy... Yeah, it probably sounds insane. Their minds were so crushed by socialism/communism regime that they couldn't imagine how independent, profit-oriented facilities (which we call restaurants) could work without governmental organisation and help.
