John Stauffer, a Pennsylvania native, served with the United States Peace Corps mission in Eritrea from 1966 to 1968, where he taught English and science to rural middle school students.
In 2003, Stauffer was reunited with one of his former Peace Corps students, who had attained educational and professional success and was now an asylee living in the United States. This interaction inspired Stauffer to volunteer his time working with Eritrean asylees, and later formally created The America Team for Displaced Eritreans in 2010.
