MAR Medical Ambassador Dr. Jessica , PGY1 Neurology Resident weighs in on transitional year vs prelim years.

"I found this to be very confusing when I was applying. So I hope this takes some of the work off your plates! If you apply to advanced programs you will need to apply to a pre-lim or transitional year. "

Hi! Thank you for the information. I am a US-IMG and am really interested to go into Diagnostic Radiology. My question is that if I want to do a transitional year first and then go for DR, Should I apply for only Transitional year programs in match 2024 and DR Programs in match 2025?

So, if you match into a transitional year and haven't simoltaneously matched in an advanced program for next year, you would have to apply for match next year again?

What about clinical genetics, they ask 1 or 2 years before entering the 2 years advanced program. Or clinical genetics is considered a fellowship? I think not.

Hi! Thank you for the information. I am a NON-US IMG, I have completed my bachelors degree in medicine and surgery and Masters of surgery in orthopaedics from India. I am currently a 3rd year senior resident at department of orthopedics. I have one research publication. Step1- pass, step 2- 243. Which programs should i go for? Would applying to orthopedic residency be foolish?

Thanks for the informative video. I'm interested in neurology. Can I apply to both preliminary and transitional year to increase my chances of matching? In case I match into a transitional year, will I be able to join an advanced neurology programs? The reason I'm asking is because I'm not sure if there are requirements for the number of weeks spent in internal medicine during internship for neurology residency. Thanks

Is it right that these are applied for through the match, same as regular residency positions?

Hi, thanks for the informative video. Can people who are applying for a Categorical IM program apply for preliminary programs as back up? I'd rather do a prelim IM program than go unmatched. Please let me know what you think.
