Gabby Thomas Wins women 200 Meters Finals | 2024 Olympics - Gabby Thomas and Julien Alfred fastest qualifiers to set up dream women’s 200m final at Paris 2024 Olympics - Gabby Thomas and newly crowned Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred recorded the fastest times in the semifinals on Monday (August 5), setting the stage for a thrilling showdown in the women’s 200m final at Paris 2024.
U.S. star Thomas will enter Tuesday's final as one of the favorites, having posted the fastest times in both the heats and semifinals. She came into the Games with the year's best time in the 200m and won her heat in 21.86 seconds.
In fine form, Thomas pulled away from former world champion Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain on the home stretch, easing up towards the finish for a comfortable victory. Asher-Smith finished second in 22.31 seconds.
The biggest challenge to Thomas' gold medal aspirations is likely to come from Saint Lucia's Julien Alfred. In her semifinal, Alfred overcame a slight lead by Nigeria’s Favour Ofili coming off the bend, accelerating to victory in 21.98 seconds. Ofili secured her spot in the final with a season's best of 22.05 seconds.
