Baby It's Cold Outside - LET ME JUST STOP YOU THERE

Please enjoy this quick video I made in response to a conversation I had on twitter regarding the infamous Christmas song "Baby It's Cold Outside."

Check out the lyrics below:

I really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)
This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice (i'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start to worry (beautiful what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar)
So really I'd better scurry (beautiful please don't hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)
The neighbors might think (baby, it's bad out there)
Say what's in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how (your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
I ought to say, no, no, no sir (mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried (what's the sense in hurtin' my pride?)
I really can't stay (oh baby don't hold out)
But baby, it's cold outside
I simply must go (but baby, it's cold outside)
The answer is no (but baby, it's cold outside)
Your welcome has been(how lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm (look out the window at this dawn)
My sister will be suspicious (gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door (waves upon the tropical shore)
My maiden aunts mind is vicious (gosh your lips are delicious)
But maybe just a cigarette more (never such a blizzard before)
I've gotta get home(but baby, you'd freeze out there)
Say lend me a coat(it's up to your knees out there)
You've really been grand (i thrill when you touch my hand)
But don't you see? (how can you do this thing to me?)
There's bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)
At least there will be plenty implied (if you got pnuemonia and died)
I really can't stay (get over that old out)
Baby, it's cold
Baby, it's cold outside

Anyway, I don't feel SUPER strongly about it but it just rubs me the wrong way and I think thats okay. My final thoughts about this are that if survivors of sexual assault tell me that a THING makes them uncomfortable, I'm gonna change my behavior to get rid of that THING. I can live without this damn song.

To other commenters- J is not saying that there aren't other things to be angry about; caring about one thing doesn't preclude you from caring about anything else. For example, I care about the poor air quality in cities like Beijing AND I also care about the Welsh language dying out. Just because one issue may be more important doesn't mean I can't care about the other thing. We have the capacity to care about many things at once.

People are always looking for something to be offended about, or taking something and twisting it around to make it a bad thing. I will never understand it and I am SO thankful that I don't let the simple things bother me...geez what a life to live... a constant feeling of being offended...

That is your opinion. If you don't want to hear the song don't play it. If it comes on the radio change the channel. It's that simple...

Oh my god, stop judging things from 50 years by the standards of today! Things will almost never age well in 10+ years, society progresses, gets more educated and standards adapt. Stop focusing on the past and just spend time making a better present and future. Also, stop being so fucking fragile with everything!! Strength is a good thing, you’ll be a lot better off.

I never really paid attention to the lyrics.
"What's in the drink" could just mean what kind of alcohol is in the drink? I've heard people ask that as meaning what's the drink made with.

The song was from 1944 i feel if the song was written today it wouldnt make sense. We dont care what the neighbors say brothers are not waiting women and men can do what and who they want.
Christmas isnt for kids its about the birth of christ also just about every nursery rhyme has a darker message and they are specifically for kids.

"Say what's in this drink?" This is what I ALWAYS say when I love a drink. Nothing wrong with asking.

There are SO many actual real life problems going on that I can’t believe people are wasting their time complaining about a song from..the 60s? People pick up stuff and run with it. There are far, far worse songs out there. Don’t like it? Turn the station. Who cares. I don’t agree with songs that involve violence or a ton of profanity so I don’t listen to them. It’s a choice.

I respect your opinion but, this is one of my favorite songs. It’s about the dance we as humans play when we’re getting to know a person we care about. Now if someone can explain to me why this is bad and some of the rap music out there is so vulgar but it’s art. I do not understand it but I can change the channel each to their own. If you enjoy that music then listen to it. If you look hard enough you can find bad in everything. If we spent as much time looking for the good in things as we do the bad we’d all be much happier. Love your videos.

Weird how this issue is coming up now not taking about your video but this songs "issue" ..just tells us how messed up our world is getting! This is not about sexual assault. This is a beautiful song..beautiful Christmas song. I dont think this song ever made anyone feel uncomfortable until someone mentioned it and said it was about "the date rape". Merry Christmas you have your own option. Agree to disagree 100% .

I can respect your opinion J! You’re entitled to it...we can agree to disagree! Still don’t think any less of people who have a different view than my own. Mutual respect:)

This is an excellent example of dichotomous thinking that leads to inevitably imagining all kinds of catastrophies based on - nothing - . Yes *maybe* that song might get perceived as the male being too pushy. But being too pushy does typically *not* end in a rape. So this song *maybe* contributes a tiny little bit to people (only males btw ?!) being too pushy (I am still waiting for the actual evidence) but surely leads not to a spike of rapes nor does it tear down all inner boundaries (or any at all probably) in a person to commit a rape. So logically it cannot contribute to "rape culture".

I highly recommend the reading of the book "The coddling of the american mind" - it might help you get a clearer, less biased view on life, and might reduce the stress that is induced by flawed ideologies.

Meh, I like the song, it's a solid classic and viewed through the lens of today's SJW standards it won't hold up. That's what bothers me about the outrage around it. It's a song that lives in the time it was written. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

The song is literally from the 40’s... everyone is a few decades late on this topic 😂

This song has been around years and years. I wonder why this year is when it became offensive. I honestly feel like it's just a song. It's nastalic to me. What about rap song s with violence, calling, woman bitches etc. To each their own. The beautiful part of the world is all the differences in opinion and every one having a right to say their piece. I just think there are more important things to think about and the people who don't like the song don't listen to it.

I'm glad my country's christmas carols are mostly about death and suffering. I've never even heard the song this video talks about, wonder why this was in my recommended though

We have more real, important things to discuss in this world than a silly Christmas song. This is too much of a reach.
