Sorting activities for preschoolers, kindergarteners and first graders. Sorting activities for kids aged 3-7 years old. In today’s video I will show you some more sorting activities, this time for children who are 3-7 years old.
In the first activity, my daughter is sorting shapes. She has one central bowl with 6 different shapes and she is sorting them into the boxes you see. These shapes can also be sorted by colour (there are even more shapes available).
In the next activity, the child is going to sort different cones. During the last year, I was collecting them.
Here I have a basket with cones and a few boxes. I have written the names of trees. For my daughter in Slovene, and four you in English. If your child doesn’t read yet, you can replaces these label cards with pictures. She is going to sort the cones of 4 conifers, cypress, spruce, cedar and pine.. So, in addition to sorting, she will learn to recognize different cones.
The next activity is related to the previous one as the child is going to sort twigs of different conifers. I found most of these twigs on the ground. First, you want to let your child observe and describe the twigs or you can help them.
Now, I have cut the twigs into smaller pieces and put them into a basket. Five containers are placed next to the basket, where the child is going sort these twigs.
In the next activity, my daughter is sorting spices.
There is one box with all the spices we have and two smaller boxes and the child is sorting spices according to whether they are used in sweet or savoury foods. This is sorting into only two categories, but she needs to read what is written on each packaging and thus she gets familiar with all these spices. So, this is not only sorting, but also a great practical life experience.
One-to-One Correspondence, Matching and Sorting are three very important skills for brain development and pre-mathematical skills and they give a child the satisfaction of creating order from a random chaos. They provide kids with confidence and they feel good about themselves, especially when they are helping their parents. I have prepared a few more sorting activities but I will upload them the next time since this video is already long enough, Let me know if you liked the video. I am eager to know what you think about it. Please, subscribe and press the bell button so you never miss a video. See you next time!
