The Lord hear thee in the
day of trouble; the name of the
God of Jacob defend thee.
This verse begins with a prayer for God to hear and protect the person in their time of trouble. "The name of the God of Jacob" refers to God's covenant relationship with the descendants of Jacob (Israel), signifying God's faithfulness.
Send thee help from the sanctuary,
and strengthen thee out of Zion.
The sanctuary and Zion represent sacred and holy places where God's presence is felt. The psalmist is asking for divine assistance and strength to come from these places.
Remember all thy offerings, and accept
thy burnt sacrifice. Selah.
The psalmist may be referring to previous acts of worship and sacrifice, asking God to remember them and accept them as a sign of the person's devotion.
Grant thee according to thine own heart,
and fulfil all thy counsel.
This verse is a request for God to grant the desires of the heart and to fulfill the plans and counsel of the person. It expresses trust in God's guidance and wisdom.
We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in
the name of our God we will set up our
banners: the Lord fulfil all thy petitions.
The psalmist expresses confidence that they will rejoice in God's salvation and that their petitions will be answered, leading to victory.
Now know I that the Lord saveth his
anointed; he will hear him from his holy
heaven with the saving strength of
his right hand.
The psalmist acknowledges God as the savior of the anointed one (likely a king or leader) and emphasizes God's ability to hear from His holy heaven and provide salvation and strength.
Some trust in chariots, and some in
horses: but we will remember the
name of the Lord our God.
This verse contrasts human reliance on material strength (chariots and horses) with the psalmist's trust in the name of the Lord as the true source of strength and protection.
They are brought down and fallen:
but we are risen, and stand upright.
This verse speaks of the downfall of those who trust in worldly power and contrasts it with the psalmist's confidence in God, who enables them to stand upright and victorious.
Save, Lord: let the king hear
us when we call.
The psalm concludes with a plea for God to save and for the king (or leader) to hear the people when they call for help. It signifies a collective request for divine intervention.
Let us Pray now
Heavenly Father,
We come before you, inspired by the
words of Psalm 20. May your name be
glorified, and may your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Lord, as we face the battles and
challenges of life, we echo the
opening words of Psalm 20:1, May
the Lord answer you in the
day of trouble.
We humbly ask that you be with us
in our times of need, and that you
respond to our prayers with your
unwavering presence and guidance.
We pray for the assurance of
Psalm 20:7, Some trust in chariots
and some in horses, but we trust
in the name of the Lord our God.
Father, help us to put our trust in
you above all else. May our faith
be unwavering, knowing that you
are our ultimate source of
strength and victory.
In Psalm 20:4, it is written, "May
he grant you your heart's desire
and fulfill all your plans." Lord, we
bring our hopes and desires
before you, seeking your
guidance and fulfillment.
May our plans align with your perfect
will, and may you grant us the desires
of our hearts according to your purpose.
As we go forth in the battles of life, we
pray for Psalm 20:5 to be true in our
lives: "May we shout for joy over your
salvation, and in the name of our God
set up our banners!"
May our lives be a testament to your
salvation, and may we proudly proclaim
your name, knowing that you are our
ultimate banner of victory.
Lord, we conclude with Psalm 20:7, "Save,
O Lord! May the King answer us when we
call." We call upon you, our King, to save
us in our times of need.
Hear our prayers, answer us, and grant
us your wisdom, strength, and grace.
In the name of Jesus, we offer this
prayer, believing in your power and love.
Amen.
