The whole bit about the bar was incredible.

Gambling, a literal bar counter, back wall full of exotic booze, a sign that read “if you’re gonna fight do it outside”.

Some things about humans never change, I guess. We’ve been doing the same way for thousands of years apparently.

That’s basically how we still make fish sauce in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia. After fermenting, we separate the golden liquid and that is fish sauce. The leftover gunk is called fish paste. They are both salty but have different flavour profiles. Great umami flavour. It’s a multipurpose seasoning.

I am almost 70 and remember the bodies found, frozen in ash, shown to us in grammar school …but to see how much more has been uncovered and saved is truly amazing !

Really wonderful documentary with Michael Buerk, who really does this city proud with his great narration and enquiring mind.
The reconstruction graphics are absolutely amazing and thanks to the technology we can view the city as closely almost as it's original inhabitants.
Very well done and thanks for this great insight into an astounding part of history.

I got to go. Standing in someone’s 2000 year old living room, checking out their wall art and floor tile is a trip, it’s just bizarre, makes you wonder if someone will check out your digs like that someday, makes you feel so connected, they were just like us. And of course the casts of the bodies. My son was 2 then, seeing a pregnant mom trying to shield her toddler just about broke me. I can’t imagine the terror she must have felt, literally hell on earth.

Another Pompeii video! I find Pompeii and Herculaneum to be endlessly fascinating--also Mount Vesuvius. I do wonder if the next time there is a volcanic danger threatens the area, that it might be Campi Flegrei. If you think Vresuvius is bad wait'll you see her big sister.

I'll never forget my trip and tour there. One of the best memories I have from my young 20's. Back then, we knew a lot less than we do now, but one thing I distinctly remember that wasn't mentioned here, was that sexual murals weren't just in the brothels, they were even in the homes. The bedroom walls were often completely covered in depictions.

Great video! And is horrifying as gladiatorial games would’ve been this fighting scene was really pretty incredible! One of the most real looking ones I’ve ever seen. I loved how they brought a new element to this by showing more about the food as well

It's sometimes hard to imagine that over 2000 years ago we had cities with millions of people living and travelling through them. What we know about our history pales in comparison to that which we do not know.

Pompeii’s people seemed so much more open-minded than people of today.
