Hey everyone and welcome back to Iowa Classic Cars! Today, I will be showing you how be your own investigator when buying a classic X frame Chevrolet or GM of the same era. The VIN tag is the birth certificate of the car, and if its gone, it may be hard, if not impossible, to verify your title is correct. This video explains what to look for on the cowl tag that can be used to prove your car is what its suppose to be. I also cover hidden frame VINs for 1958-64 chevys as there is a lot of false information floating around regarding where they are and what they say. With this video, you should be able to buy any 58-64 chevy with confidence or investigate your car to verify the frame and body match, as thats a selling point because the car is all original! If this video helped you, please leave a LIKE rating!

Take a shot every time Ryan says "Janesville" and you'll be lit in less than 10 minutes!

You know what they say Ryan. There are twice as many LS6 Chevelles and L88 Corvettes out there, then Chevrolet ever built. So my advice would be, to NEVER buy a high dollar car like these, without proper documentation. But I think most people with enough money to buy an LS6 Chevelle or L88 Corvette already know that. But thanks for the informative video on these cars.

I own a 1971 rover p6. To buy a car like the ones you have, in the UK, would cost tens of thousands. You're very lucky, to be able to buy them for far less in the states.

It always amazes me that Fisher Body painted and put the trim on one side of the factory and Chevrolet put the dog house on just after the body drop and the paint matches up. Especially with metallic colors.

Ryan great lesson on the vin and cowl tags. My '59 shares that "J" in its vin number. So your ravine Chevy and mine comes out of the Janesville Wi. plant. The cowl will also tell you paint color and extra "addons". Mine indicates tinted windows. I was a little saddened at the beginning when you showed the ravine car. She carries a great story though.

Thanks for your video, as this knowledge is becoming more critical. It is not at all unusual to see ads for cars that are mislabeled as to some major point, such as year or model. I recently dealt with a car flipper who had acquired two cars at an estate sale and was honestly confused about the model years. It was also clear that he had not tried to match the titles to the VINs. This could have led to a chain of events with no good ending.
Most of the ads I've seen with incorrect model years involved selling the car on behalf of a third party; regardless, most sellers are quick to try to correct the information. But I've also seen cases in which although the title matched the VIN, the grille/front fascia or other year model identifiers were incorrect. The seller would then tell me of having no knowledge of such alterations as implied by this.

Ryan, it's ultra common to find V8 bodies with the That is the "Fisher Body" tag.... that's just the way they numbered things.... it would take a six or eight.... even though they tagged it V8.

There is a guy on eBay (trebor*99) that makes repro vin tags that are dead accurate. I've had a few done, and they are spot on. Might be the guy your referring to.

Great info, thanks for the video. I replaced a fender on one of my 59 bel air’s and that fender had a vin# on it in the jam by the hood, it came off an el Camino.

Oh and also, I’m missing my vin number on my 55 oldsmobile, so how do I confirm my cowl tag matches my car.. And where can I get a replacement?

Thanks for the info! I have a 1963 Impala convertible but my vin and cowl tag have different plant manufacturers? Cowl is VN (Van Nuys) and Vin has J (Janesville)? Also car came with Original dealers sales Ticket and has Paint listed as Autumn gold which car is currently autumn gold but cowl tag paint code is Palomar maroon? Not sure what to think.

Thanks for the video . I'm going to have to cut out my floor board on 1962 impala to do a Vin verification by CHP . Because car was bought in Oregon. What a hassle . But I get it, alot of stolen parts out there . Hopefully nothing is stolen and I will have new floor panels . Thanks again.

Something you missed is that there's another partial VIN on the driver side rear frame rail about a foot forward from the back corner of the frame. It's on the top as well. You might try looking on that pitted frame and see if it's there. I've found it on two 63's so far.

I got a few 1963 Chevrolet titles . One for a hardtop Impala and one for a 4dr Bel-Air Both 283 V8 cars. Both got squished. Wish I had another one.

My vin has a 29 stamped on it that is clearly added to the cowl tag, not hidden but deliberately added with a bigger number. I know that Hertz had rentals before I always wondered if that’s what this was idk. It’s in a 65 convertible though.

Is there a way to know by the vin tags on a 63 impala if it had a 283 or a 327 ? I know the ss trim was optional. So how would you know if you have a ss Impala with a 283 engine ? Or non ss with a 327 engine ? Where engines a dealer option ?
