Europe's name, apart from ending in A in other languages, comes from the greek mythical character Europa, so it's just the English language changing things

About Eurovision, to compete the countries have to be members of the Eurovision Broadcast Union (EBU). One requirement for being a member of the EBU is being in the European Broadcasting Area (EBA), which doesn't just include most of europe, (except some of most eastern part, meaning Kazakhstan isn't in it, despite being partially in europe), but also the surrounding of the Mediterranum and the caucasus. Associate Members can also join the contest, but only if they have been invited, that's how Australia is in. The US is also a associate member, so if the EBU ever invites them, they could take part.

The Eurovision map is wrong. It left out Kazakhstan, which is also a member state of the EBU, the European Broadcasting Union. And yes, a tiny part of Kazakhstan at the Northeastern banks of the Caspian Sea is actually in Europa. It also left out Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan, which are invited to Eurovision, but never participated. Lebanon and Tunisia actually were scheduled to participate, but withdrew because Israel was also participating.

The Netherlands managed to avoid WWI because they had good ties with both Germany and the allies. Queen Wilhelmina was befriended with German emperor Wilhelm, wich helped to avoid invasion, but because of the Dutch ties with Belgium and England, they also couldn’t join the Germans.

Ah yes, annexing Kaliningrad is a great joke. My granny's second husband used to make such jokes when I was little. He also had great stories from a place called "Stalingrad", and an old military medal with a funny cross on it. Died of old age ~20 years ago.
