Why Do Couples Look Alike?

Couples that spend decades together, begin to look like each other.

It is human nature to seek what’s familiar because what’s familiar is predictable and that is an important aspect to build trust. Hence due to a subconscious recognition, we tend to like others that look like us or our parent. Specifically the parent of the opposite gender. And this isn’t just a Freudian concept, this is coming from current research.

Psychologist Robert Zajonc studied Photographs of couples and found that after 25 years of being together, couples started to look alike.

Reason - Spending time with each other increases empathy. Human emotions are communicated via facial expressions. We smile when we are happy, frown when we are sad, and knit our eyebrows when we are angry. A couple that has been together for long, learns to mimic each others expressions in the process of empathising.
