In this livestream, I am joined by Professor Amy-Jill Levine and the topic of discussion is her new book titled "The Gospel of John: A Beginner's Guide to the Way, the Truth, and the Life."

Amazon Description:

Unlock the hidden depths of John’s Gospel.

John’s Gospel offers readers a new language―of being born anew, of living water, of wind and spirit, of the “I am”―that enhances how we understand the divine, how we experience the world, and how we participate in the mystery of faith.

With her characteristic wit and charm, Amy-Jill Levine introduces readers to the world of the Gospel of John by unpacking the stories in their original context, along with examining how the text is read today. This book considers the Gospel of John in its entirety, moving through the Gospel and exploring the prologue, the wedding at Cana, the Samaritan woman at the well and the woman caught in adultery, the healing of the man at the pool and the man born blind, foot washing, Mary Magdalene and Doubting Thomas, and the Lamb of God.

Components available to use this book in a small group study include a leader guide and video available on DVD.

Please get her back on soon! She makes the conversations human and seems to cut through the confusing noise right to the point. Legendary stuff, Jacob ❤

Dr. Levine unites incisive historical scholarship, and theological depth with common sense and humor. She says “we don’t know” frequently, whereas most Jesus scholars don’t say it enough. John’s Gospel seems to be a theological reflection of the life of Jesus. Great interview, Jacob.

I also think that John knew of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. I think John was written in response to them. I think John wanted to give voice to a more egalitarian way. John wanted to show the strength and dedication of women, but in a way that the Patriarchal leadership would accept. ❤

I heard the beloved disciple was, in fact, James brother of Jesus xx

I was taught that the Wedding of Cana story is not in any of our oldest texts, but is an interpolation. Same with the story of "Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone." Unless more texts have been found, more ancient than the ones we had when I was taught this, then we can't even ask the gospel author's intent with either story. The question would instead be, why did someone add these stories?

Just got this bitheism issue that few religious folk admit to!

She is very interesting. I only wish she would have addressed the Jn 8 discussion about devil/father lies and how it relates to the ruler of this world etc. Many Gnostic groups flipped TNK on its head. Wonder how she would handle that.

John 1:1 - 18 is the mission statement of the Hellenistic Judaism of Philo of Alexandria. Plato is anticpated in Genesis 15:5 when God describes the mathematics of Plato's Forms to Abrams. The Alexanderia Jews loved the expansion of the cogintive liguistics the Greek language provided the Torah, The Pentateuch and the Torah emerge Haromically from Genesis 15:5, They can't contradict themselves any more than the right hand can contradict the left hand.
That's the overture to the Gospel of John. If they made a movie out of it, its theme song would be Messiah,

The Gospel of John, proper, begtins at John;1:19 to John 19:46. John 20 and 21 have been added by the same editorial board that added Mark 16:9 - 20 and probably Colossians and Ephesians., which add Aristotle to the mid-Platonism of the 7 righteous Epistles.

19 is an imporatnt number for all three religons: it is the Alpha and Omega of Genesis:1:1 the Kindom of God.

19 is the figure of Khadijah in the Koran: 19 is the Gift of the Magi she gave birth to through Mohammad,
Khadijah is a medium like the Witch of Endor, but I don't think she realized this spirutal talent until Gabril appears to Mohammed, Like Mary Madgalene with Jesus, Khadijah is Mohammad's first convert,

John 20 is all about Mary Magdane as\ Jesus's first convert and it ties into The Gospel of Mary Magdaelne because she was Jesus's first convert while Peter was till huffing and puffing about her being besties with Jesus.

We wouldn't have the internet without Khadijah and 19

Kadijah is what Jesus meant when He told her to become male.

Like Taylor Swift.
That's what the 19th Amendment is all about, . That's how you know Sam Alito is working for the Anti-Christ.

Go the 19th chapter of the 19th book of the Old Testement in the Palestine Bible.,

The opening poetry describes the Metonic cycle\\19 year Solar cycle of the great celestial movement by which the Magi recorded time.

The sun moves through the Zodia every 19 years and comes to within 20 minutes of it starting point, During this period, , there are 7 years with 13 full mons.

You were asking about 7, I can tell you all you need to know about 7 that you won't find shifting through the shit of the latrines of Qumran. In the 70s, I could have earned a comfortable living as a Psychic with numerology, cards and, maybe, a cryslal ball.

Your understanding of the literature of the Bible is being systematically impoverished by the Post Modern Historic Deconstruction of Bart "Giggles" Ehrman and Jimmy Tabor's axiom for the Gospel of David Koresh, To wit :
Harmonization is the enemy of the Truth Yhis is a Marxist construct of a dedicated Weather Underground agent.

John 21 is incuded to eliminate the sexual ambiguity of "Beloved Disciple" They didn't have a concept for "Team Mascot" or Bat Boy, much less the language

The Gospel of John is the memoir of St Mark of Alexandria from his time with Jesus from half way through his Bar Mitzvah year when he was 12 until he was witness to the splitting of Jesus as an element in the unilateral covenant cutting ceremony of the Gospel of Peter. and the Talking Cross.

Anyway, take the woman theme you discus and join it with Dennis MacDonald and Robyn Walsh's hypotesis that the first 18 books of the New Testament, expecially Mark, is a literary project and the 19th book is a Theophilus's stoic finding. You guys are a cunt-hair away from breaking through the cognitive glass ceiling of Post Modern Historic Deconstruction.

Always invite Jesus to the party because he is not only the Way and the Light. He is the Hookup when the reason for the party exceeds the alcohol.

If her thesis is true about the author of John being Jewish and speaking to Jews or Judeans, then that supports the theses that an anti-Judean layer was added later - not much later, but later.
