James noticed that Sirius and Remus liked each other in fourth year. He knew that they were both too scared to admit their feelings so he decided to write this song to make it easier for them.
Remus had told Lily about his crush on Sirius and she really wanted them to get together, but she kept the secret, of course.
When James was working on the lyrics in the common room, Lily read them secretly over his shoulder, got excited and helped him finish it even though she hated James at the time. Them performed it together in the Marauders dormitory soon after that. Both Sirius and Remus turned red as tomatoes

The story of this song. James and Marlene wrote it then one day in the Great Hall they jump up on the Staff Table and Marlene whispers to McGonagall "we're gonna sing a little song Minnie, aight?" Marlene is playing the guitar and James is singing, Peter is backup vocals. Amazing!

Marlene: I know the melody
Peter: I can do the backing vocals
*James runs up to the teachers table and whispers to Minerva* : Alright Minnie we’re gonna do something big
Minerva: *look of pure fear on her face*
*James, Marlene and Peter all wipe their dishes and stuff off of the Gryffindor table*
James: *jumps up on the table and grabs Peter and Marlene’s hands and pulls them up*
Peter: *currently struggling to get on the table*
James: *clears his throat*
James: *starts belting this out*
Marlene: *playing the guitar*
Peter: *doing backing vocals*
Remus: *head palms and bangs his head on the table*
Sirius: *low-key trying to pull James off the table* SHUT THE F*** UP POTTER

Minerva: How much do you want bet Black won’t get Potter off the table?
Albus: Oh don’t be silly, Minerva, look at the boy. I’ll bet you five galleons he’s in the hospital wing by 7 o’clock
Remus: *continues banging his head on the table*
James: *still belting at the top of his lungs like the Drama Queen he is*
Remus: Torture. It’s actually torture
Sirius: Better off letting him finish, he’s not stopping either way. May as well save my energy
Minerva: See, Albus I told you. Black has given up
Albus: POTTER, SING LOUDER
James: *starts basically screaming the song*
Sirius: They’re running a bet on me pulling him off the table, aren’t they.
Remus: Yes, Sirius, yes they are
Sirius: Should we just nick the invisibility cloak and get back to the common room, nobody will notice anyway
Remus: Why *clears throat* Uh- Sirius why do you want to go back to the common room
Sirius: *gay panic* To…..study?
Remus: *very suspicious because Sirius would never want to study rather than listen to James embarrass himself*
Sirius: You’re also a little hot in here- I MEAN. IT’S A LITTLE HOT IN HERE *gay panic continues*
Remus: *bi panic* Uhm..
James: *finally finishes*
Albus: BLACK, DETENTION
Minerva: *whispering to Dumbledore* Albus, you cannot give him detention because he didn’t pull his housemate off a table
Minerva: POTTER, MCKINNON, PETTIGREW, ALL OF YOU IN DETENTION, DON’T MIND HIM BLACK
Marlene, James and Peter: *in unison* Totally worth it *Peter finishes saying it like two seconds after Marlene and James

Also I imagine James just jumps up in the middle of the great hall, whips out a guitar, and belts this out. He ends the song and the entire hall is like in silence and then busts out in applause for the boys!!
