Transcript:
Welcome to week 41, which means after all that counting down, the official pregnancy week clock has run out, and you're now in pregnancy overtime.
That's frustrating and that's putting it politely, but it's not at all unusual. Fewer than 5 percent of babies are born on their actual due date. Around 6 percent overstay their welcome in Hotel Uterus and arrive in week 41 and beyond, thriving well into the 10th month.
Though you may have lost that thriving feeling weeks ago. Remember that in most cases, an overdue baby isn't overdue at all. It's just that the due date was off from the start. Less often, a baby may be truly overdue and termed postmature. When a postmature newborn does debut, it's often with dry, cracked, peeling, loose and wrinkled skin, all completely temporary, with soft, fresh baby skin soon to follow.
Why so crinkly? Because the protective vernix was shed weeks ago in anticipation of a delivery date that's come and gone. Postmature babies will also have longer nails, possibly longer hair and definitely little or no lanugo, that baby fuzz. In general, postmature newborns tend to be more alert and open-eyed. After all, they're older and wiser.
Just to be sure all is well, your provider will likely monitor your overdue baby closely through non-stress tests and checks of the amniotic fluid or biophysical profiles. Any indication that your uterus is no longer hospitable or that the placenta's no longer meeting your baby's needs, and your provider will likely recommend labor induction. One thing is for sure: That sweet little bundle of baby is coming any day now.
