This is Episode FIVE.

As we move through the book, we'll discuss each of the main players: Queen Elizabeth, (the-then) Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William, Catherine, Prince Harry, & Meghan Markle, and we'll dip into a wide variety of stories, including:

* The period immediately following Diana's death
* Then Prince Charles' attempts to regain the trust and respect of the British public
* His desire for Camilla to be accepted not only by the Queen, but by the country
* William & Catherine's meeting & marriage
* Prince Andrew's missteps during these years
* the beginnings of the relationship between Prince Harry & Meghan Markle
& * the tremors that relationship would introduce into the British royal family

Let’s consider these things and more — and discuss them together in the comments!

Jess, have you ever seen the movie My Fair Lady from 1963?

I just keep thinking about how Eliza Doolittle’s father said something about, “morals are for the middle class “. Roughly quoted.

Keeps going through my head as you read this chapter.

I enjoy your reviews so much! Palace Papers is interesting. I strongly recommend The Other Kennedy Wife, about Ethel Kennedy. It's about her family and of course the Kennedy's enter. It's does not disappoint. Every sentence brings a surprise. Skakle family, there are no words! A novelist could not make this family up. With Ethel, having just passed this is timely. Jerry Oppenheimer is the author. I watch your reviews and enjoy you so much. Karen

10.58 Back seat in the Aston Martin. I couldn’t agree more about Sarah NOT warning Diana of the sordid and disgusting lack of morals exhibited by Charles and his ilk.
Your comments at the outset concerning commitment in marriage are commendable.
It seems as though among the whole lot of them there was not a moral fibre to be found.
This can be borne out in Charles and Diana’s case when he allegedly spewed the following statement at Diana: “Do you expect me to be the first Prince of Wales NOT to have a mistress?” (I cannot recall the source - possibly Tom Bower.)
I cannot help but wonder how many STD’s were passed around in the process.
The term “society abortionist” seems darker than an insult aimed at someone.

I agree with your comments on Charles' and Camilla's (and Andrew Parker Bowel's ) behaviors! Today, as many viewers see the King and Queen they remark how adorable they are and their love story goes way way back. I won't comment since I do not know them but their relationship reminds me of cute elderly grandparent looking men and women that, back in the day, were atrocious...yet many humans, myself included, can often turn a blind eye to one's earlier behavior b/c people look "adorable".

I am pleased I was raised with my “middle class morals”.

I suspect explanations were not needed between C and C. They both knew the rules of engagement. Also was struck by how much Cam looks like her ancestor Alice Keppel in facial terms in previous episode.

I’m like you, Jess, I don’t understand that kind of ‘wildness’. But I’ll be the first to admit, probably a prude. At least in the eyes of the world!!

16:01 Charles and Camilla appear, from the outside to have a mutually loving, respectful marriage now. I have often wondered if they had to make some adjustments after their legal marriage in 2005 after, 50(approximately) years of sneaking around in an adulterous relationship?

The attraction? Camilla seems mumsy to Charles while the Queen apparently wasn't.

Hi Jess - please don’t worry about pronouncing UK names. Please just take it lightly & assume when it’s just us Brits we actually pronounce all these place names phonetically 😊

My word Bolehyde manor was a very grand place WOW for first home after marriage.

Yes, those aristocracic morals are sure strange. Do you think they still behave that way?

I didn’t realize Camilla’s marriage was so extremely sad with those very sad circumstances 😢

I guess affairs within the aristocracy is a fact of life that is never even questioned. They are supposed to be a model of polite society, but the dirty underbelly is quite shocking and revolting. I remember reading a quote about Ernest Simpson, the husband of Wallis, that he was so desperate to be accepted into the upper echelons of English society that "he would gladly lay down his wife for the King". I think it's hard for us Americans to appreciate the class structure that exists in the UK and how entrenched it is. Diana was famously quoted as saying she was the virginal lamb to the slaughter when she wed Charles. It was meant to imply that Charles married her callously as a brood mare, with the Windsors plotting the whole thing. The truth is that Diana's own family were desperate for her to marry Charles and thus have that intimate and direct connection to the Monarch.

It is way worse than even I thought!!!
Incidentally, there seems to be a subtle campaign being waged (certainly on YT platforms)
to portray Camilla in a FAR less favourable light. How much of that public drubbing is true is a matter of debate, but the comment sections are pure gold.
