Exciting News! What's Happening on the Homestead | Learning Propagation

This will be an existing year for @1870s Homestead! We have a lot of new things planned for this year - with one them being establishing a farmstand. We would like to be able to sell some of our extra vegetables from the garden, plants, maybe some firewood, and some honey. To be successful with this, we're got to get started now ♥ So today, we're taking cuttings from our Elderberry trees, and Gooseberry bushes to start more plants that we can sell to others. In most cases, propagation can be quite easy, but that doesn't mean there's no learning to be had. Today, we'll start taking you along on the process and share what we're learning with you, as we go.

I ordered some Elderberry cuttings a few years ago. The directions that came with the cuttings said to put cuttings in water until they root. I did that and now I have five Elderberry bushes that are doing great.
Good luck 🤞🏻

I used to get 10 gal+ per day out of one tree. Carry 2 empty pails with lids with you and just swap one when you check on them. When full, I pour ½ the sap off into the other empty pail, put lids on both. Makes it easier to carry back.
I used to just store the sap outside. It’s plenty cold out yet. Maybe put them in the garage IF the days get warmer. You need to have that burner going whenever you are home and can monitor it. You can refrigerate the reduced sap until you can get to it.

Gooseberries are ridiculously expensive, and so very tasty, so I think propogating those is amazing! Love elderberries too. Good luck with the farmstand! Will be very cool to see how it all turns out.

Exciting to hear you are planning a farm have a little egg wagon for a couple years and this year I want to expand what I offer, as long as I got people stopping for eggs I figure I may as well add more things for sale. I feel encouraged knowing you are planning that too.

I never hear anyone in North America talk about the magical things you can do with elderflowers. I live in Germany and elderflower cordial is super popular here.
