First song with rap vocals to hit #1 on the US charts.

I know Debbie Harry. Outside of the Sugarhill Gang, she was the first major artist to bring rap to the masses.

Blondie hit #1 with songs in 4 different genres, Heart of Glass (Dance), The Tide is High (Reggae), Rapture (Rap) and Call Me (Pop/Rock).

this back story is crazy, shes rappin about the then underground hip hop parties they had in the bronx, she mentions Fab 5 Freddy and Flash (Grandmaster Flash). The story is F5F had linked up with blondie and he had taken her to a party Flash was having (F5F told me everybodys fly a dj spinnin a set in my mind) and she was impressed by his spinnin (Flash is fast, Flash is cool) and the rappin and party itself, thus bringing her here!!

This was before 99% of humans had ever even heard rap music. There were only a couple rap artists who had albums at this point in history.

One of the things I find cool and fascinating is that Debbie was 35/36 in 1981 when this song came out. Nowadays the only people who aren’t teens and twenties in the industry are legacy singers who are already established. She became famous in her mid 30’s and I just love that for some reason. She’s 75 years old now.

Debbie Harry was a regular in the late 70s club hip--hop club scene, and the lyrics contain a bunch of references to the early DJs and rappers on the scene at the time like Grandmaster Flash and Fab Five Freddy.

"Call Me" should be on the playlist. Clem Burke is an absolute locomotive on the drum kit.

My 9/10 year-old self knew every word to this rap in 1980. It’s funny that you can’t hear the individual lyrics because when I hear rap today, I miss most of the words and meaning. This was definitely different for Blondie, but a huge hit.

"Rapture" is a song by American rock band Blondie from their fifth studio album Autoamerican (1980). Written by band members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, and produced by Mike Chapman, the song was released as the second and final single from Autoamerican on January 12, 1981, by Chrysalis Records. Musically, "Rapture" is a combination of new wave and hip hop with a rap section forming an extended coda. The accompanying music video for "Rapture" made its US television debut on Solid Gold on January 31, 1981, and not only became the first rap video ever broadcast on MTV, but was part of its first 90-video rotation. Set in the East Village section of Manhattan, the "Man from Mars" or "voodoo god" (dancer William Barnes in the white suit and top hat) is the introductory and central figure. Barnes also choreographed the piece. Much of the video is a one-take scene of lead singer Debbie Harry dancing down the street, passing by graffiti artists, Uncle Sam, an American Indian, child ballet dancer and a goat. Fab Five Freddy and graffiti artists Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat make cameo appearances. Basquiat was hired when Grandmaster Flash did not show for the shoot.

the tall "creepy" guy was Geoffrey Holder - A Trinidad/American Actor and dancer best known as the "Uncola Man" from a series of commercials for the lemon lime flavored "7UP" soda.
