So today I'll be turning a glass dish into a silver mirror using some chemicals.

fun fact: the reason why vampires traditionally can’t be seen in mirrors is because when vampire legends and stories started being written and became popular, mirrors were still being made by silvering. the silver is what would cause them to not have a reflection. so, technically, vampires would have a reflection in modern mirrors because they aren’t made of silver

For people who dont know what its called its Tollens Reagent also called Silver Mirror Test for aliphatic and aromatic Aldehydes

edit: although it is only used for aldehydes but except alpha hydroxy ketones also give this test because they tautomerize into aldehyde and also formic acid hcooh

For those who don't know, this is basically the tollen's test (or the silver mirror test) and it is used to differentiate aldehydes from ketones. Carbohydrates contains an aldehyde group so it reacted with the solution to give the silver precipitate, which settled down on the bottom of the glass and makes the glass act like a mirror.

This is similar to aldehyde test. Any aldehyde + Tollens Reagent (Ammoniacal silver nitrate solution) oxidizes the aldehyde to its corresponding acid salt, and a silver mirror is formed on wall of test tube. Since glucose is an aldohexose, it responds to this test positively

Wow! Practically seen! It's the tollen's reagent, the silver mirror test. Where Tollens' reagent is a chemical reagent used to distinguish between aldehydes and ketone functional groups along with some alpha-hydoxr keytones  which can tautomerize into aldehydes.

This is one of the conformatory tests for carbohydrates. We use Tollen's reagent with the carbohydrate and heat it and hence a silver mirror is formed. I like this experiment :)

To everyone that wants to try this, please be insanely careful because you’re making something called Tollen’s Reagent and if prepared with wrong proportions of ingredients or mixing the steps, you can make an extremely sensitive explosive called silver nitride (Ag3N), which is even more sensitive than nitrogen triiodide (NI3) and can explode even when in solution or when wet, actually, I think it’s the most sensitive explosive I think exists

I my class 12th NCERT textbook this test is called Tollens test or silver mirror test which is used to detect aldehyde functional group 😊
