CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sy (Robin Williams) messes with his former boss' head by giving him an envelope of pictures of Bill's (Gary Cole) daughter.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Funnyman Robin Williams steps out of character in this tense, low-key thriller that marked the feature-film directorial debut of music video veteran Mark Romanek. Semour "Sy" Parrish (Williams) runs the photo processing department at a large discount store; Sy is dedicated to his job, and takes great pride in his work. Sy's favorite customers are Nina and Will Yorkin (Connie Nielsen and Michael Vartan), an attractive and cheerful young couple with a nine-year-old boy, Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy dotes on the Yorkins and their son whenever they drop off film to be processed -- something they've been doing quite often ever since Jake was born -- and Nina and Will are indulgent of Sy's attentions, regarding his as a harmless eccentric. What the Yorkins don't know is Sy is a desperately lonely man with no real life of his own, and he's been obsessively making copies of their photos, for years, imagining himself to be "Uncle Sy," a member of the family. Sy's tenuous hold on reality begins to collapse when he develops a roll of film brought in by a new customer that suggests Will has been unfaithful to Nina; the notion that his ideal family may be falling apart is troubling enough for Sy, and when he loses his job, Sy reaches the breaking point. One Hour Photo was screened in competition at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

I loved how cold and lonely this film was.

Love how at 0:10 he purposely raises his voice and draws attention just to humiliate him, it's funny.

Gary Cole is scary good at playing realistic bosses.

I'm convinced that comedians have the best range when it comes to acting. Robin nailed this.🔥🔥🔥🔥

The scene when he comes out to his car and sees that someone has broken his windshield then has dinner alone at the diner is so heartbreaking. This is such a good film because from the outside Sy looks like a creepy guy, but when you get the back story that he was abused, lonely, isolated and had one misfortune after another you feel so sorry for him. You truly see how he got to this place when all he needed was some friends and human companionship aka a place to belong.

Gary Cole: supremely underrated actor.

This and Insomina are two very underrated movies with very underrated performances from the legend himself. Robin Williams had shown he can play really dark characters.

A nice touch that really upped the creepiness factor: the way Sy gradually panned in on the little girl from one photo to the next. Director Mark Romanek isn't exactly a household name, but he crushed this.

Love the doll looking at Bill in the last one. “That’s right, Sy went there…”

I don't believe Sy had any intention of harming Bill's daughter, that was just him getting one over on his former employer. As Robin explained in the commentary, it's about Sy knowing where Bill lives, knowing where he's most vulnerable "and there it is." Pure intimidation. A photographed middle finger.

This is a rare example of a film that doesn't have any character who is clearly a villain and yet is still a good film.

The Academy robbed Robin of an Oscar nod. Kudos to Gary Cole, too. I thought he was excellent as the cold, unforgiving store manager.

Obviously Robin is brilliant but Gary Cole is very underrated. I love when he asks Sy why he's wearing the protective gear even tho he saw him on camera dumping that stuff. He never liked Sy

I love the way he takes his glasses off and drops them on the desk after he sees the pictures are for Sy Parrish

The world is a dark and foreboding place without Robin Williams

I love how his name is Bill, just like his character in Office Space.
