Why I LOVE being an Estuarine Ecologist | SciAll.org

ABOUT THE VIDEO

Enjoy a nice crab sandwich every once in a while? Think sea otters are cute cuddly little things that play with cutely shaped ice and toys just like they do at aquariums? (they're actually pretty vicious predators, spoiler alert!) Do you love to bird-watch? How about fish? Do you think sharks are cool? Then you LOVE ESTUARIES! Estuaries are in my opinion, the coolest systems ever. They're literally where rivers meet the sea, which means that you get all sorts of cool animals that include terrestrial critters like bunnies or raccoons, aquatic animals like river otters, freshwater crocodiles, giant water bugs, caddisflies, dragonflies, etc. AND marine animals like sharks, rays, sea otters, flatfish, crabs, you name it! The animal you love may very well rely on estuarine habitat for a portion of its life! For example, lots of the food we eat starts its life in estuaries--for lots of animals, estuaries act as daycare or pre-school...the place you go before you're old enough to walk to your friend's house on your own... at daycare you're protected, you're able to learn the ropes and grow big and strong so you can become a strong young kid. Estuaries are nature's daycare, I mean they are literally called nursery habitats...I could really take this analogy further but I'll spare you. Estuaries are awesome, they are a blend of all sorts of animals, some land-based, others are both aquatic and marine (what SALMONNNNNNN), and others, just marine! Like this video to show you love estuaries and comment with your favorite animal and I'll tell you whether or not your favorite animal relies on estuarine habitats in some sort of way! -Kat

Wow, it's a great video! I'm thinking of being some sort of marine ecologist. I would like to know what was her career/academic path was like and is there a lot of coding/modeling involved or mostly policy/regulations?

Thank you for your hard work! I am currently in my last semester, on my way to getting a BS in marine vertebrate biology!! Here, on the east coast, there are PLENTY of habitats to study. In particular, seagrass (Z. marina) habitats have a special place in my heart because I have done intern/volunteer work for a seagrass ecology lab at my school! Let me tell you, you seem like you would fit RIGHT in with the seagrass ecologists that I know! (I mean that in a very good way, I promise!!) My favorite animal found in these habitats has to be the summer flounder, or the fluke. This fish has historically been fished in my area for generations, and is very well managed in terms of distribution and abundance. They can change their color, and they have their eyes on one side of their bodies... I mean how much more fascinating can a flatfish be?!?! Seahorses are really cool, too!!

Thank you for sharing! My aspiration is to become a coastal ecologist... where on the coast? I'm not sure, however what I do truly love is discovering how all different forms of life interact on the coast. Estuaries are great, however I haven't, until now, considered them a future study area. I have several questions. 1). What is your favorite biotic interaction to witness in estuaries? 2). Were estuaries always your passion? or was it an incredible discovery along your career path? and 3). What are some of the major parts of estuarine ecology that need research emphasis?

Feel free to only answer 1 of these if you don't have the time! Thank you in advance!!!

What’s the weirdest animal you’ve studied?

0:13 .... "an estuary is where the land meets the sea"... - forgive me but isn't that called the *coast* ?
I think you meant to say "an estuary is where the river meets the sea" !

My partner just built a house on an estuary. We know its prone to floods so he built it high off the ground but would an estuary be a suitable place to live?
