This is creepy, but the history is amazing, it must have been scary for all who were involved in the underground railroad, I commend them all for their courage!

That washing machine isn’t all THAT old Kyle. It’s a wringer washing machine. I helped my mother use an older version of this type of washing machine in the mid 1960’s in Nebraska and later in Oregon when we moved there in 1964. But then again, that’s ancient history to a Millennium, such as yourself.

You would but HOT water and soap in the tub with soiled clothing and turn on the agitator. After the clothes had been washed for a sufficient amount of time, you would put them through the wringers. You had to be careful that buttons went through flat or you would break them and/or tear the clothes as well. The wrung out clothes would go into a tub of warm or hot clear water to be rinsed out. The wringer would swing out about 90 degrees to allow you to wring them out again into another clear water rinse then finally the last swing of the rollers out to 180 degrees to wring out of the clothes into a basket to take them out to the clothesline’s outside to hang them up to dry. You used hoses to fill the washer and associated tubs and other hoses to empty them. It was a lot of hard work.

The newspaper at 11:44 is giving detail history about the enslavement of Negros. Considering that this was a house that was used to participate in the Underground Railroad, news clips like this are not surprising. Maybe you should go back and take a closer look at some of the other newspaper clippings to see what they have to say. Looking for the hidey holes used to conceal the runway slaves in their bid for freedom would be fascinating. These hiding spots often were not very big nor easy to get into much less comfortable. These folks went through a lot just to be free.

I do enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting!

This was a really nice exploration Kyle. If the last time someone lives there was in 1966, according to that newspaper, that mean it has been 52 years. Apart from the vandalism, people throwing the appliances outside the house, no one has lived there in a long time . Thank you for sharing!

That tub doesn't look old...all the old houses I use to go in as a kid didn't have tub or toilet.... They had outhouses which was a toilet outside of the house

Absolutey fabulous for me to see that old wringer washer. When I was a child I got my whole arm wrung up one of those things when my mom was washing. She had to take the thing apart to get me out, I was ok except for the screaming, haha both mine and moms. Great find to me you for the memory :)

How come this house has not been listed as historical if it was used for the underground railroad? It would be great to know the history.

This house looked pretty looted. That was cool meeting the farmer and learning about the underground railroad.

Because I'm old enough to be your mother, I concern myself about your health as you explore. Those houses have mold and germs. And I've watched you fall through through the floor, etc. 😂 I say a prayer for you and your friends as I watch. 🙌😁

From the looks of the shoes, I would say that the last person who was living there wasn't an old woman but maybe a younger woman in her 40's. Old women can't really wear shoes like the ones you have found there because a lot of old people have bad feet. The old washer you found my grandmother had one, you would wash the clothes in the washer and then ring them out remove the soapy water (some people save the soapy water and reused it for several times for washing more clothes, same with the rinse water) into a stationary tub and add rinse water re-add the clothes rinse them with clean water and ring them out again and then hang them outside to dry. It was a lot of work to wash clothes in the old days. Some women would get up REALLY early in the morning to hang out their washed clothes to beat the other neighbors who would be hanging up their washes clothes. If you were seen hanging up your washed clothes later in the morning the neighbor would gossip about you about what a lazy housewife you were. Well, that is what my grandmother told me. She also told me that is where the expression a woman would say to another woman "she got her tit caught in a ringer!" I think it meant she got in trouble and couldn't get away with it.

Interesting video. Cool fact that the house was used during the time of the Underground Railroad. Keep up the good work Kyle.
