As a writing tutor, one of my favorite tips for undergrad collegiate essay writing is as follows: Any time you are including an anecdote from an individual in your essay, whether it’s a quote or an excerpt from another work of theirs (an article, essay, etc), and if it is more current (i.e., from a recent news story, a contemporary author, or simply an expert in a field/subject that you are referencing in your essay), always state who they are and their credentials prior to giving the quote/info you are including. For example, in an essay about essay writing, I might state: “John Smith, Chairman of the English department at ABC College, states…”. It’s an extra step- and a really impactful one- that allows the reader to award some credibility to the information you are divulging (not everyone references what you list in your bibliography/works cited page). It also makes you sound like you did your research, too!

Edit: You don’t need to/shouldn’t do this for prolific figures. We all know Shakespeare, Austen, Einstein, etc., because their reputation precedes them!
