Nenets reindeer herders migrating across the River Seyakha on Arctic Siberia's Yamal Peninsula

The Yamal Peninsula in the Western Siberian Arctic is actually 60% water. This is partly because it is on permafrost, but also because it has 50,000 lakes and 3,000 rivers.

In winter, rivers in Arctic Siberia freeze so thick that the ice can support the weight of a 50-tonne truck. The nomadic Nenets reindeer herders have no problem migrating across these on their caravans of reindeer sledges.

However, in summer, the reindeer also have to migrate 2 - 5 times a week to have enough grazing. Almost every migration involves a river crossing. They use the same sledge trains, known as argish, as they use in winter, with reindeer swimming across the river and pulling floating sledges behind them.

Nice. These are the same people I just saw in Ms Humble's documentary on nomads.
