RARE BLACK TIGER captured on camera trap in India

There have been reports and one painting of pure black tigers with no stripes. The majority of black mammals are the result of a non-agouti mutation. The ticking of each individual hair is referred to as agouti. The pattern can still be seen in certain lighting conditions because the background color is less dense than the color of the markings. Pseudo-melanism is the cause of so-called black tigers. Pseudo-melanistic tigers have thick stripes that are so close together that the tawny background can barely be seen between the stripes. There are pseudo-melanistic tigers in the wild and in zoos. Inbreeding is said to be increasing the number of such tigers. They are also said to be smaller than normal tigers, possibly due to inbreeding or misidentification of large black leopards as black tigers.
