This is so lovely— I feel like a consonance of meaning between mashed up songs like this is rare. It feels like a different emotional experience. Like the emotional center of each song is present & then together feels confessional in this new way. Like I’ve never really appreciated the feeling of Madonna’s vibrato in this song as a person who once froze to love. And the structure of Unravel, for me, that Madonna’s pleas are situated right where Björk would say “so when you come back, we have to make new love—“ hoo, emotional. Sounds like someone who has lost their fight to love someone, who wasn’t able to spark the memory & possibility of warmth, with another person lost in an existential blizzard. Like, “so when you come back, we’ll have to make new love, ” but here, by the end “Unravel” feels like a freezing heart, and you don’t hear that line bc you know now that, it died… they’re not coming back. It feels so mournful— like so many moments of mourning, not a perfect expression of what you really feel or mean, but a release into the present, relenting, like the characters in each song have reckoned with oncoming loss. (almost makes me feel similar to “Teclo” by PJ Harvey). And also like two artists I have appreciated unintentionally reflecting on loss together.
