Wood rot is a killer. A pal of mine just replaced a large piece of the bottom on his self-built ply20ft ply/glass sailboat. My son spotted a small imperfection when it was on its side for painting, which turned out to be a MUCH bigger problem than anyone expected. Never mind. The good thing about building your own boat is that you can always fix it ... even if it takes a while. Cheers

Our head started like this, and now I have the entire section stripped down to the bare hull as I get all the rot out and prepare to rebuild the head (with more standing clearance so I don't hit my head anymore)!

On very small varnish jobs, I just use paper to dab varnish on. No fuss and easy clean up.

When I replace plywood on my boat, I use pressure treated, it has the waterproof glue like marine plywood but cheaper and termites don’t like it, like marine plywood, .your framework will last longer and you’ll be thankful in later years if you epoxy the side you’re attaching your plywood to, , saturate the engrain of all plywood and wood, , it’s like a sponge in leaks, wash downs and sinkings, , , , if you’re heading south, , the sun and weather will eat up your northern woods like marshmallows, , teak is still supreme but expensive, , check out your southern exotic woods, , there’s a lot to choose from at different prices that will surprise you, , when you see someone building a deck, if it’s Ipae, ask if you could have some of the scraps they’re throwing away, makes great blocking, ( it’s in the iron family, , don’t worry about the sparks). It’s a beautiful wood but heavy, , you work hard on your boat, , you don’t want to do it twice, , I don’t have a problem with pressure treated southern pine (check out the end grain), fair winds

Nice work, Kevin. For the rest of you, the plugs are called "plugs", not dowels! If you go into a hardware store and ask for "dowels", you'll get a long, round stick, whether you're in the South or the North. Dowels are not suitable for what Kevin's doing. I worked as a Shipwright for over 35 years in Florida (the South), Washington, Oregon, California and Alaska. No one who knew what they were doing, called them "dowels."
