Amazon are a band from reading in the UK and consist of members with Matthew Thomson on vocals and guitar, Chris Alderton on Guitar and Elliot Briggs on Bass.
The band’s longevity and professionalism are demonstrated by their ability to craft a flowing body of work.
“21st Century Fiction” isn’t just a collection of songs, it’s an album that’s needs to be to be listened to from start to finish.
The Amazons take us on a journey through far more than just an album.
A good piece of fiction often includes memorable and impressive scenes.
While there are several here, the intro sets the tone.
“Living A Lie” questions reality, lies, and fiction.
The low can become high, the dark turns to light, and hope shifts into anxiety.
Sunrise or sunset on the horizon, this opening track gave me chills with its epic progression, that clear, almost divine voice that opens it all, and its deep basslines.
The transition into “Night After Night” is seamless and still carries that atmospheric ambivalence that places their fiction somewhere between dystopia and utopia.

The various interludes form a bridge between the different styles the band dares to explore on this record. (Panic) moves into “Pitch Black”, with influences of desert rock.
With “My Blood”, a bold and epic classic rock sound awakens.
“Shake Me Down” links to “Wake Me Up” with a vibrant feel and tinged with folk.
(Intermission) is a genuine break, once again luminous and cinematic.
We pass through another portal, into another world, and suddenly find ourselves in a dark, electric, and thrilling noir film with Joe Bought a Gun.
Linking it all with real-life events and current worldwide politics might not be just a coincidence…
“Love Is a Dog From Hell” is more surprising with its marked country energy.
It’s catchy, still somewhat dark, and although it stands out, the song fits perfectly within the concept of the album.
“ The Heat! pt.2 “returns to a sound more typical of the band, followed by “Heaven Now”, ideal for setting the mood in a desert cyberpunk world.
The Amazons close 21st Century Fiction, their search for reality within the imaginary, with ”Go All The Way” which sounds delicate, epic, and uplifting.
A great conclusion to a particularly accomplished record.

The first time I heard it, it left me perplexed. New sounds, a dark style, a lot has changed compared to how I knew The Amazons.
It took me a week of listening to this piece to love it and it's really beautiful! It's one of those things that slowly creeps up on you and then conquers you. Just like realising that you're living a lie...
I would like to ask you if Peter Gabriel inspired you, isn't it?
It reminds me a lot of him.
