Hello everyone, welcome back with us again at another episode on Military TV! We are going to take a look on a high-tech weapon firing projectiles at tremendous speeds even up to six to seven times faster than sound! Yes, such of this typical weapon is called Railgun! Perhaps, it might come into mind “would it be possible if this weapon replace conventional guns in the future?” Anyway, I don’t think anyone will get the real answer until you guys are watching a full video of today’s episode!

It is widely known that technology is on the way to making step from science fiction into reality in the twenty-first century. When compared to smart bombs and missiles, the concept has the potential to provide an effective weapon for pennies on the dollar. Railguns, the weapons that propel projectiles over 100 miles at hypersonic speeds utilising electrical power, instead of using gunpowder or jet or rocket motors, it employs electricity. As of 2020, railguns have been researched as weapons utilising electromagnetic forces to impart a very high kinetic energy to a projectile rather than using conventional propellants.

I thought the Navy has abandoned this area of research.

sorry to be "that guy", but the title should read; "would it be possible <for> this weapon <to> replace conventional guns in the future"

Instead of making a rail gun, how about making a gun with rails so that navy personnel can practice their skateboarding during their downtime.

The US navy has halted further development in favor of hypersonic missiles but I still think the railgun has future as and upgrade to traditional guns. Hell if the technology can be improved and shrunken down I can see a future with tanks having them.

your french pronunciation was very good, especially for an american

Why is this a new video? Railguns are dead in the water for the Navy.

There are most likely gonna be railguns on tanks some day in the future

How much energy is released when the rail guns round strikes a target?

1:41 I'm quite interested in the effects on a projectile at different mach values. The would make a good video.

The rail gum got put on the shelf because every shot fired it fucks the barrel up

We have commercially available rail guns. Small arms sized and full auto capability.

Don't know why they are going with the U.S. they already cancelled the railgun project ( and they don't even have any plans to restart/recontinue or hints of restarting/recontinuing it in the near / mid future or foreseeable future ), and just because they couldn't do it doesn't mean no one else can, at all . Others are still going ahead with it . It will be the next arms race . Hypersonic missiles are good with way more range and velocity but can never take the place of railguns or guns for that matter . Hypersonic missiles are still missiles and more expensive and aren't really as advanced as railguns ( The US first developed them like 2 decades ago ) . Railguns can be used in close and mid range combat and can achieve hypersonics like capabilities, going a considerable comparison, half the velocities of hypersonics, over Mach 6 . It has over 100 miles range . That is a great deal when you consider hypersonic weapons get their performance - speed and range from powerful engines, that makes up more than half of the vehicle/missile . It gets it by electricity, electromagnetism . It is comparatively cheaper and I for one don't see the need for firing lots of hypersonic missiles/ weapons for every threat / target, it needs to be decisive and not used in abundance . Whereas you can just fire large projectiles for the most part . Railguns can fire quickly as well, not as fast as autocannons but they will get there, somewhere close there at least, and have comparative rates to many artillery and guns used today . Japan and France and Germany, collectively, are working on railguns as well and I see them becoming more practical and ready for combat testing by the end of the decade . I believe in Japan's goals . These nations ( France and Germany, Japan, Turkey, and maybe China and Russia and even India possibly ) can do it . The U.S. however will be playing catch up with others on the railgun arms race in 10 years however, like with hypersonics, mark my words .

Transformers 2... No The US Navy did not abandoned the tech, they got the technology from Area 51. Optimus prime gave them the technology.( ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)

I don't think you'll have to worry about a railgun direct energy weapons have it beat by a mile.

Why get stuck on mach 5 when US adversaries are playing between mach 10 and 20? Face palm. For railguns to be better than hypersonic missiles, its projectiles need to travel faster than mach 15. Otherwise, focus US efforts toward the development of hypersonic missiles traveling close to mach 20.

This is the unclassified info.
The real rail gun is classified and already in use by the military.
