I was at school in 1974 in Australia when we changed to the Metric system, having just learned Imperial measurements. It was not difficult to learn Metric, as it is so FREAKING SIMPLE AND EASY. Stubborn adherence to an obviously clunky and difficult Imperial system epitomises perfectly the insularity of American people and their culture. Truth is, most Americans have only the haziest notion of what the world is like outside the USA.
