The Lady Chapel is the single longest lasting achievement of Henry III. The Lady Chapel was designed during the rebuilding set in place by Henry III in order to set in place a true tribute to the Virgin Mary. He brought in an Italian designer to add onto the abbey. Then, under Henry VII, the abbot was able to get the resources necessary to finish the vision that was described by Henry III. Henry VII also turned the area into one where the kings and queens of England could have their tombs be in the cathedral, but not next to the shrine of St. Edward, if they so pleased. Henry the VII was buried in this chamber, as his tomb remains the most ordain in this area.
The chapel vaulting was also a way in which we can see how this abbey became a gothic style cathedral. The vaults in the ceiling are a clear indicator of the gothic style arriving in England based upon the plans of Henry III and the execution through Henry VII. However, it also shows how the cathedral is still based in a traditional English setting through the single aisle through the church that is unique to English churches, rather than the double aisle that was used in the other gothic churches around Europe.
