Fender '72 American Vintage II Telecaster Thinline Demo | First Look

7.25" fretboard radius and cunife magnet-based Wide Range pickups make this the most authentic ’72 Thinline since the original.

In the 50 years since their big, chrome covers first reflected a hot stage light, Fender’s Seth Lover-designed Wide Range humbuckers have gone from maligned to revered. The guitars built around Wide Range pickups are legends in their own right, too. Keith Richards’ Telecaster Custom is synonymous with the Stones dynamic and adventurous late-70s-to-early-80s period. Scores of punk and indie guitarists made the Telecaster Deluxe a fixture of those scenes. And Jonny Greenwood almost singlehandedly elevated the Starcaster from a curiosity to an object of collector lust. The fourth member of the Wide Range-based guitar family, the ’72 Telecaster Thinline, lived a comparatively low-profile life. Yet it is a practical, streamlined, uniquely stylish, and multifaceted instrument with a truly original voice—qualities that are plain to see, feel, and hear in this new American Vintage II incarnation.

Finally, they are doing this guitar justice. It's the best guitar to come out in the 70s from any brand, and now we have a proper reissue. Thank you, Fender!

Been waiting a long time for Fender to come out with this with the proper pickups.

Thanks for the demo and review, John. I had no choice but to hunt one down after seeing your Rig Rundown with Tab Benoit. Even found myself a reissue in sunburst. Now just need to get thirty years of sweat on it! Thanks for the always-awesome videos.

I was so impressed by the review I went to @chucklevin's music in Silver Spring MD and tried the first one they got in. I am now the proud owner of a '72 Thinline. Thanks John!

Hi John, great review there dude... My buddy, "Cousin Vinny" from Brooklyn, has around 65 vintage guitars. I only have around 20 some... So, Vinny buys this 72 Vintage reissue like this. I didn't even get a chance to try it out and he sent it back for a different guitar for reasons unknown. I have two original 50's Tele's. One 56 and a 59. Love em both. Our buddy, JW fro TB and TWB wanted them years ago. Not for sale. Not even 5 figures... LOL... Anyway, back to this 72... After hearing this review, I may just grab one for fun!!! Why so expensive though? Keep up the great video work you do. One of the best for sure. Cheers!

And lastly, while some people will say I'm crazy or full of it, the tube amp sounded better! And I thought the modeling amp really sounded pretty good. But there is information coming from those pick ups that just can't be reproduced by ones and zeros. There's information between the ones and zeros that gets lost and I can hear the difference plain as day. The tube amp just has something the solid state modeling amps will likely never be able to copy.

I haven't felt the new guitar urge like this in quite a while but that thinline has caused an acute GAS flair up.

I bought a '72 Thinline second-hand in 1982. I've owned many guitars since then, but NOTHING beats it. (I guess I should have saved my money and stuck with that one guitar only!) The pickups are incredible.

I'm not a Tele guy, but this one... this one is so amazing, not only a true beauty, but it sounds so damn good even with a boosted drive. So f*ng awesome! 🎸♥

Great job John. This is one of my favorite guitars and the one I use to demo our pedals when we go to NAMM and Sweetwater.

I’ve been after this 72 reissue for ages and I’m going in tomorrow to my local Long and McQuade store and order one absolutely stunning little instrument

I had to buy a high-end Fender Custom Shop Tele to get the proper CuNiFe Wide Range humbucker, so it's awesome that Fender is putting them in a much less expensive Tele now. Good job, Fender!

I had a Thinline for about 40 years, I sold it.
Worst thing I have ever done. I loved that guitar.

I bought one of those new around 1972/3, and it was a top guitar- the best Fender I ever had until my current Custom Shop Strat. I did sell it a couple of years later to buy a Gibson SG with P90s, but probably a bad move at the time 😞

Great tones and killer playing as always bro! 🙏😄🙌
Even the squier version of that one is fantastic. It actually became my main guitar!
Be well, and thanks for the post!
