I was out at a local beauty spot lochore meadows, Fife in Scotland just the other day because I was motivated to be creative with my camera. I do tend to sit wishing I could improve my camera skills too much instead of going out. ( though in my defence I spend a lot of time painting ) Anyway I took some awesome photos, in spite of the fact it was not the best time of day for light. It was a rather bright day and around lunch time onwards, so it was challenging but I think shooting in challenging conditions really helped me to learn about light. I also managed to do a creative video too. So yes, you are right we need to do more shooting photos than wishing we could do it.

I really related to a lot of what you were saying. It does not just happen in photography there are a lot of people in the art world who try to convince others they are not artists of they do x y and z or don’t have the most expensive art supplies etc. but the truth is we actually decide if we are a photographer or artist by our actions, . I’m sure there are many who will argue against that statement but I don’t really care lol 😉 what do you think? T

Thank you for saying these. It could be overwhelming for beginners.
I figured I'd just learn the basics and my cam's manual. Keep things simple so as not to let the noise take away the joy of taking photos. Besides, I only bought one to to take photos of my plushie collection, my sister, Noche Buena and the Media Noche (just the food).
I feel shy taking photos outside. But I would try harder this year.

Great topic that I love seeing all photographers cover, and it's never gets old! 👍
Working the scene is definitely something that I wish I did more of as a younger photographer. All of these points are right on the money!

When you talked about investing in computer space - I definitely agree and to also backup. I lost years of photos because of a hard drive crash. I’m so paranoid now, I have 3 backup hard drives.

Great tips. I personally don't like the technical side of photography and gear. Some of the favorite photos that I like are from famous film photographers that have a very soft look to them, almost look like paintings.

14:05 Speaking of listening to others and when not to. I *went to Bangkok in November 2017 and I took a photo of a monk and when I came back to Singapore I edited it in Colour Spot where the monk was in colour and the rest was in B&W. At that time I was trying out Masking with my wacom so I did not really give much thought to it. A admin of a FB group I'm in posted an article about fads in photography and one of the fads is Colour Spot photography.

After I posted my photo one of the admin commented "I invite you to read the article about fads". To digest it of what happened next, the admin and some members did not agree that Colour Spot should be done in photography and some members argued that it wasn't a big deal as there's no rule when it comes to art. Anyway, when it comes to art there's no right or wrong answers there's only those that agree or disagree with what you do.

@ gear : I agree with you but in this consumerist society it is hard to not be tempted by getting the latest gear & even harder to have s.o. advising you wisely. It’s as if you were obliged to get the Latest/Best technology because it’s available (I saw this in a YouTube Video “ get the best gear !”). I met a Belgian photographer (I think you know him - Xavier Portela) who said “ Do what you like” and Oh Boy do I like this philosophy !!
