I think most of the developed world ought to have a holiday commemorating Stanislav Petrov's virtually-impossible-to-match contribution to the planet and it's 8 billion people. There's no way to overstate what a hero he is. Without his direct effort hundreds if not thousands of nukes would have obliterated most of the Americas, Russia, and greater Europe. He identified a false-positive during the absolute most fear-filled era of the Cold War, when Soviet brass constantly debated just launching first, because they were practically convinced America would soon nuke the USSR with no warning. If one of Petrov's more militant colleagues had been in his chair, none of us would be here. He's no longer with us, but he finally started receiving some recognition in the recent decade. He should have a Nobel Prize.
