Perhaps it wasn't drilled out as a core at all. Perhaps it was a chunk of marble spun and cut from one end to the other like a lathe.
That would be much easier than coring it, and would explain the continuous groove.

IMO this core sample was not produced by the ancient Egyptians. It's probably much, much older.

I believe at least 5 distinct species have risen and became extinct on this 5, 7 billion year old planet. Could be they were human similar to us, And they all failed at nuclear power stage as we seem about to do.
