This lesson explains how you can improve your English through reading. This is a powerful method so be sure to watch the whole video!

Here is a question that a lot of learners struggle with: do you stop reading to look up the definition or just continue?

This highlights the difference between:

Intensive reading: when you read to learn new words and analyze the language.

Extensive reading: where you don't stop and you read for pleasure.

More on my reading for fluency method soon but first...

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOOK FOR YOU:

1. The genre: the category. Choose books that interest you.

3. Books you enjoy: if you don't enjoy the book, put it down.

FINDING BOOKS (GREAT TIP!)

Find books with audiobooks too.

INTENSIVE vs EXTENSIVE READING:

I recommend that you do both. Here is how:

1. Read extensively but highlight words (sentences that you don't understand)

2. Do this for each chapter or for a certain number of pages

3. Go back and look up anything you don't understand

BONUS TIP:

This is a way to internalize the new language and grammar.

ENGLISH FLUENCY PROGRAM:

My program gives you the method that will dramatically improve your speaking, grammar, and pronunciation and the materials you need to follow this method.

This method works and if you are ready to FINALLY speak English with confidence, I would love to have you.

COMMON QUESTIONS:

Q: Where are you from?
A: I grew up in Preston, Lancashire, England.

Q: How long have you been teaching?

Q: How can I improve my English?

Q: Do you have a book that I can download?

Q: What camera do you use?

First book I've ever read in English was "A Walk to Remember" by N.Sparks. And I could read it extensively, there were very few unknown words probably because it is quite a modern book with simple language.
Another easy book is "The Beach" by Alex Garland, it is also written in modern and simple language. There is a bit of slang vocabulary but it seemed useful to know it.
One more great book is "Gone with the wind", at first it seemed too complicated to me, especially those sophisticated descriptions of nature and people's looks, in addition there were lots of obsolete and archaic vocabulary. I simply couldn't get the idea of a character's appearance without looking up every second adjective. But after several pages it became quite easy since I had already memorized some 'new' words and I could recognize them further in the book. If you survived the introduction and description parts, you can really enjoy the rest.
Later after having read the book, I wanted to use the vocabulary I'd learned and it was a tricky thing because I always had this fear to say something in an old-fashioned way.

I started reading in English and French few months ago but I stopped because I found a lot of new vocabulary and I was hesitated between looking up about each word meaning or just coming across and continue to read. I fell so frustrated and disappointed about my week vocabulary. But now, I think that I won't struggle again because I will use your method.
Thanks a lot 💝💝💝

Oxford has a good selection of books based on your level, and in the end of the book there are some exercises to do.
I've read one of the their books and it was interesting, not boring at all.

Here are some of the books I've read and recommend
Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Edgar Allen Po
- Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, Arthur Conan Doyle both for intermediate to advanced level.
Four Weddings And a Funeral by Richard Curtis, Cherry Gilchrist for Intermediate Level.
Reading biographies can be a fun way to engage with the story and not put the book down. Cheers!

"The Giver" by Lois Lowry is a great example of book for beginners and intermediate students. The book is just about 100 pages, but the plot and vocabulary are really exciting.

Reading Wealth of Nations has been an excellent English learning experience for me. Though I have read only 40 percent of it, my ability to quickly read through and understand complex sentences, that are 50 - 100 words long and consisting of several commas, has improved by leaps and bounds.

I love Dan Brown's books so I'm currently reading Inferno. It may seems difficult at first but doing this method highlighting the words or sentences you don't know and reading one chapter at a time, it'll be easier!!!!
