A groove (normally backline instruments) can be on the beat, eg: 'Another one bites the dust'. It can also be on the off-beat eg: the chorus in 'Oh what a night'.
Pocket (sub genre of Groove) requires a solid back beat with consistent accents on the off-beat . Like the man said, anything uptempo by James Brown. A drummer _playing In the pocket_ allows the rest of the band to swing against and across the beat.
