Title: Interpreting neurite or fibre density changes: tricky scenarios & pitfalls.
Session: Tractometry: Peering into the white matter
Speaker: Thijs Dhollander
Abstract: In this presentation, we will take on the challenge of interpreting neurite or fibre density changes, as derived by commonly used diffusion MRI techniques. We will explore and learn that interpreting such \"density\" metrics can be surprisingly tricky, and many pitfalls await us. Quite often, morphological differences will factor into the interpretation, leading to various unexpected explanations of the observed results. For the purpose of this presentation, we will mostly work with the \"apparent fibre density\" metric, or \"fibre density\" (FD) for short, which can be analysed in a truly fibre-specific manner using the Fixel-Based Analysis (FBA) framework. However, the lessons we will learn apply more broadly for any density metric, such as e.g. the neurite density from NODDI, among others. As a result, attendees will be able to perform more critical assessments of the results of their and others' studies.
