Arcadi Voldos' thrillingly fulgurant live performance of one of Scriabin's late masterpieces -- though "really fucking trippy" suffices as a description, I suppose.

For those who came seeking the super arpeggiato chord, it is on 11:38

Scriabin really favoured the "grace-note flourish followed by a trill" motif in his late sonatas. Like deadly flickering candles.

personally i think this may just the the single greatest piano solo ever written... aggressive, dark, painful, hopeless, spiritual, otherwordly... no other piece takes me to the same place this piece does

00:44 transition
01:14 secondary theme
02:42 Codetta
00:10 horizontal process of the vertical
09:24 Symbolic motif: Light motive
02:39 Symbolic motif: Flight motive
11:12 Resonance effect (the symbol of bells)
10:00 Sonorous suggestion of the ecstatic dance
11:54 The final cadence disappears/ The typical non-ending in atonal pieces(As one of the late piano sonatas of Scriabin's career, the music is highly chromatic and almost atonal)

Delirious, jubilant, sinister, searing, apotropaic ... Scriabin's musical ideas are wondrous and well-integrated.

Beautiful Sonata, mystery, passion and feeling interpreted divinely by the great Volodos.

I can just tell it's Scriabin's work by the rhythmic ideas used. Strange, but true. The intro is a very good tell of this.

I'm literally speechless by awe. Scriabin and Volodos are geniuses!

Somehow I don't think this would be received too well if it was played at an actual mass.

This sonata kills me... It looks like fog... Which is talking you.. And which is around you....

Glemser was my previous favourite, ahead of Hamelin, Richter, Ashkenazy (all of which have their merits). But this may now be the best version i've ever heard - spacious, the right weight given to every note or chord, incredible atmosphere and sound quality. You barely notice the technique here, the music is alive; a spellbinding rendition - including the coda and 'super-arpeggio' chord which Volodos gets exactly right.

this truly was the highpoint of piano writing... I can honestly not think of a single piece that stands up to these late sonatas. Also the printed music is fucking gorgeous

The recapitulation is one of the most intense moments in any piano piece

When you give this sonata a chance, its astonishingly beautiful. - even when playing it.

If those "Biblically-accurate angels" had a theme, this would be perfect

I love so much the intensity of this piece.

This was surely inspiration for Olivier Messiaen...

I love how Ashish doesn't write an analysis
