Our first entry in a six-part monthly series that takes us inside the creative inspiration behind some of Limited Run Games' most popular releases. In this episode, host Jeremy Parish visits the WayForward offices out in California, where River City Girls director Adam Tierney walks us through Delphine Software's classic 16-bit adventure Flashback: The Quest for Identity. Learn how Flashback's groundbreaking design helped influence the way River City Girls plays—and how it tells its story as much through its environments and settings as through its cutscenes!

I ADORE Flashback. And yes, the Genesis version is the definitive version in my opinion.

Man, the gameplay of Flashback sure is reminiscent of Oddworld! Wonder if its creator also came to this game for influence. I think it was being created when that game had come out

I would never have traded River City Girls' roots to Flashpoint. But I appreciate Tierney's approach to storytelling and innovation within a game's own mechanics. Fun stuff!

I haven't played RCG yet, but I hope to get around to it.

Eric Chahi games were so influential. If you really get down to it, even Naughty Dog's seamless cinematic style can be traced to it.

This is a great series idea! Love gaining insight from the devs on their own games. Hope to finish Flashback on my Switch someday, but it's so flippin' hard and the constant retread after dying (where are the checkpoints??) is something I'm still getting used to.
