Accelerationism - The Social Movement No One Asked For

Hello YouTube! Hope you're having a great Thanksgiving weekend. I'm about to ruin it for you. My friend told me about this social movement called Accelerationism. Basically, capitalism and social disorder are speeding up, and a lot of people want to see them speed up faster and faster until the engine blows and we're back in covered wagons.

This is a very brief video, but you can learn more about it online. Don't look it up if you're gonna take it too far. I don't want that on my conscience! No ethno-state, no molotov cocktails, just read and go on about your day. Promise?!!

Let me know your thoughts! Are you in the "Let it burn" camp, or do you want a future?

I fully agree, it is easier to tear things down than to build it back up

I've seen some crude misinterpretations of accelerationism on the Internet but this really takes the cake

This seems to operate on a vulgar definition of accelerationist theory. Looking into the foundational literature, such as the CCRU, Nick Land, Sadie Plant, Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams, paint a fundamentally different concept: acceleration is not a thing you consciously do; accelerationism is an attempt at understanding that which is accelerating outside of rational control - - we're the car, and capital is the driver. Even believing that there is inevitably a collapse as a result of acceleration is in contrast with a foundational quote from Deleuze and Guitarri: "nothing has died of contradictions."

This video was published years ago, so the authors' understanding might have evolved during that period. This comment addresses the statements made at that time. I also acknowledge that it takes a lot of courage to put oneself out there and share their opinions online, especially in video format. I applaud the boldness. My words are not meant to attack the person, but the ideas presented.

Accelerstionism is not about taking down society nor collapse. It's about evolution.

This video essay was either biased or based on narrow research and didn't fully understand the ideology.

Accelerationist strands of Left, right isn't necessarily tied to the American political party system of left and right.

The author of this video took a tiny faction of doomsayer talk then categorised it as the entirety of accelerationism.

You read Nick Lands' essay but stopped short on L/Acc and R/ACC without without mentioning U/ACC (unconditional accelerationism).

Accelarationism is an attempt at understanding the rapid pace of change in society as a result of economic and technological forces with a consideration of how to approach said changes. There are several approaches, traditional approaches according to Accelerationism do not work because different times call for a different mindset.

What's intriguing to me is that the 1st sentence of Nick Lands' essay was quoted at the beginning yet time wasnt taken tobfully understanding its meaning. It's a disclaimer of sorts. The Quote:

"Anyone trying to work out what they think about accelerationism better do so quickly."

It means that because of the nature of the fast changes in society and the world as a whole, by the time you think you know what's what, reality has changed. We will always be playing catch-up because that's the nature of a world that changes quickly. Therefore, we need to adopt a quicker pace of analysis and decision making and humbleness. Furthermore, what we understand of accelerationism is never complete since it will always be evolving with the waves of changing conditions.

I.e we now have a new strand called effective accelerationism.

And tomorrow there will be a new one based on the changing landscape of capitalism and technology.

In short, the concept calls to power through the storm rather than cling to the past because resisting change is not a good idea.

This is an extremely poor video essay on the topic. Even calling accelerationism a social movement is to miss the forest for the trees by the nth degree.

love this Maye..A great example of this in a way is when Haiti gained their independence. After they won a lot of people were in celebration mode and thought the work was done. Jean-Jacques Dessaline had to remind them that there was way more work to be done....you have to rebuild, re-sow crops, build defenses, etc...and b/c they didnt want to do any more work they killed him, the person who just led them to independence smh

The argument for accelerationism is that you can hypothesize about what is on the other side of the collapse because we have some anthropological evidence of societies pre-capitalism, whereas with what lies beyond suicide, there is no testable hypotheses.

Hey Maye, like a year ago i began gardening. i was going to a free class every Saturday, buying pots, the right soil, and mineral-based fertilizers. i bought a cherry tomato plant and planted both bell peppers (green/red) and collard greens. It was slow going. As my pepper plants got older they produced smaller peppers. Had to get rid of them. My collard greens have grown big and tall, but it was months before i had leaves big and plentiful enough to fill a pot. Many of my plants have died along the way. i grow organically, so bugs are always a problem. i felt like i had to do something with all the uncertainty and now with the pandemic i am glad i got a little head start. i am ready for the end, but i am also ready to limp along if that's what happens

To be honest it was a bit hard for me to swallow/follow but I took it as a sign to show that somehow, in one way or another havoc and destruction is destined to be our mantra.

I do love you. Oh great! I’m going to look this up. I don’t always agree with what you are saying but you always give me something to go think about. This sounds way too dangerous and too scary. So.. we don’t have time for this right? Right! Stay enlightened. 🤗

While I disagree with your fence sitting on this, I think it's a vital question ppl should keep in mind while things play out. I don't think either extreme is optimal but the leftist accelerator side sounds logical and something investigate further.
