Deputy Joshua Hankins from the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office was shot multiple times and taken to a hospital for treatment. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital just after 5 a.m.

I'm guessing the timing is a little skewed, me thinks the returning fire was the cause of the wreck into a ditch on a straight road. Of coarse that's not to say the deceased hadn't shot at them while driving and that put him into the ditch. And chances are we might not ever find out.
