Yeah I dropped out in the late 90's to work in a door factory full time at 16 because my family was poor. No kid should ever have to do that.

I had my first job, illegally, at 13. more of my jobs as a minor were either illegal, committed wage theft or other federally illegal crimes than were legal jobs. this was with good child protection laws & in a state where you have to get a physical permit that must be signed by your parents & school when you work. the last thing we need to do is remove protections.

Child labor exploitation is one of the motives behind exploitative forced birth policies. Conservatism runs on exploitation of unpaid and underpaid labor. Prison labor is just one example.

Children should be in school. Anything that limits their ability to do that (e.g. night shifts) should be disallowed. It’s absurd to be loosening child labour laws.

Ive worked for five years now, and im twenty years old. Ive definitely missed out on things like sports, clubs, volunteering, family activities, socializing etc, that my peers who dont have to work wouldnt have. A job looks different on a resume that volunteer or internship work in your field, but i have to work. Nevermind the fact that most kids are part time workers, in un unionized industries.... Its easy to see why these politicians want to 'groom' these kids into accepting poor working conditioms.

Young people want to work because they are constantly reminded of the financial burden they pose on their families. My mother reminded me on a daily basis my whole life, and I was desperate for work when I was a teen, I worked off the books every summer on a landscaping crew. I ended up taking on multiple jobs as soon as I turned 18, and completely burned myself out by the time I was 21. I fell into complete financial ruin, and I haven’t recovered completely and I’m 29 years old.

I wish I could have that time back to be a kid, focus on school, and learning to manage my mental health, but the conservative media convinced me I needed to work more hours, give up on education, and things would get better. I have nothing to show for any of it.
