I completely understand your takaway, honestly the story of the eye is better as a companion to something like Erotism: death and sensuality, because Bataille's ideas are so out there it takes time to actually allow them to take enough root that you can entertain them. When you do though, oh boy! Bataille is undoubtrdly a weirdo, but he is a really insightful and intelligent weirdo, which led him to getting very far and deep in the subjects he decided to direct his work, namely death and sex.

It’s not a turn on, that’s for sure. Ugliest love story ever told. Fascinating in a way… but disturbing… maybe it represents a symbolic destruction of the dominant ideology and culture… I’m not sure if I like it or not but I respect it.
